Fay Ferre Sumsion April 13, 1923 - January 11, 2024

Fay was born April 13, 1923 in Provo, Utah to John Welba and Susan Izela Montague Ferre. She was proud to be from Provo and recounted many happy stories from her growing up years.

After graduating from Provo High, she worked as a bookkeeper at Squirt Bottling Company and Columbia Steel (later known as Geneva Steel). She moved to Phoenix, AZ for a short time to work and lived with her cousins, Opal and Cleone. She always talked about what fun they had living in a very small apartment with all three of them sleeping in their one double bed.

After moving back home to Provo, she met Gerald (Jerry) Sumsion at a dance and in November 1949, they were married. Fay and Jerry first lived in a small apartment in Springville, Utah, and in 1950, she gave birth to their first child, Steve. In 1952, they bought their home in Spanish Fork, Utah, where Jerry worked. In 1954, a daughter, Susan, was born.

Fay and Jerry lived the rest of their lives in their home in Spanish Fork. They were fortunate to have great neighbors and never wanted to live anywhere else. Fay treasured her many friends. There was the coffee get together with the neighbor ladies every weekday morning at 9:30, she bowled on the Monday night ladies league at Dukes Lanes for many years, she was a member of the Canasta Club which met every other Thursday night at different members’ homes. Later in life, she loved her ceramics class at the Spanish Fork Senior Center. She painted many beautiful ceramics but what she loved most was being with her friends.

Family was very important; one of her happiest times was the birth of her granddaughter, Cristi. Fay was everything one could ask for in a grandmother – loving, indulgent, protective, always there. Then came her two great-grandchildren, Haiden and Macie. They were her world. Despite some medical setbacks last year, Fay was determined to go to Macie’s wedding in August. She was able to fulfill her wish.

Fay was preceded in death by her parents, sister (O’Rhea), husband (Jerry), her son (Steve) and son-in-law (Bryan). She is survived by her daughter, Susan Dutson; granddaughter, Cristi (Randy) Renshaw; great-grandchildren, Haiden Reese and Macie (Korbin) Mott.

We would like to thank Mom’s neighbors who have helped and watched over her for many years, especially Rex and Matt Rose and Doug Christensen; and Susan Taylor, who, for the past several years, has come to the house and washed and fixed Mom’s hair. She made Mom feel better, look nice and was a good friend. We are very grateful.
