Waldon Standley Vincent, 82, of Spanish Fork, Utah passed away peacefully July 9, 2022. He was born in Spanish Fork to Myrtle Braithwaite and William Standley Vincent. He never strayed from his beloved Riverbottoms, where he lived his whole life.
When Dad was high school age his parents and two younger brothers moved to Southern California for work. Dad chose not to join them, continuing his education in Spanish Fork, living alone and taking care of himself.
Waldon met the love of his life, Evelyn Harmer, in Springville, Utah. They were married October 23, 1959. After a brief honeymoon, Dad went hunting leaving his new bride home with his mother. Waldon and Evelyn were later sealed in the Manti Utah Temple, December 27, 1962.
Dad and Mom made their first home in his parents’ home, as Dad’s parents were still in California. Five years later, Mom and Dad built their own home next door, in his beloved Riverbottoms. Together they raised four children. After their children were raised, they opened their doors to 28 exchange students, and became legal guardian to Tsenu.
Dad worked for the US Forest Service as a Range Technician responsible for over 200 cattle permitees. Later, he worked along with the Bureau of Land Management as a crew boss on forest fires all over the Western United States. He then went into construction working for S&W (Cargil) which took him to Mississippi, Alabama and Egypt. Then he worked for Cop Construction, Dale Barney Construction, and Sun Rock. He couldn’t stay idle after retirement age and went to work at Spanish Fork Jr. High as a custodian. His favorite job and what he loved most was running his small farm, raising and caring for his beloved cattle. He would spend countless hours just watching them in the field.
Waldon served on several committees in the Spanish Fork community including the Utah State Junior Livestock Show, the Diamond Fork Cattle Association, helped with the Jaycees Easter Egg Hunt, worked on the Canyon Park path, and the 24th of July Rodeo concessions, and the B.B. Gun Safety Committee. He worked with the Boy Scouts on big game conservation projects and was a Big Brother in the Big Brother organization. He was a member of the Jaycees and was awarded the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award for his many years of service.
With all of this, Dad was a man of very few words. He would often say, “I don’t know what to say,” and was uncomfortable speaking in front of others. He was one who didn’t raise his voice or like confrontations. He was a man of his word and very persistent in making sure you did the job or task you said you would do. He didn’t like laziness or being late. If he said we were hauling hay or branding the calves at 7:00 a.m. – he meant 6:45 a.m.
He loved his Diet Mountain Dew and cupcakes.
Waldon is survived by his children: Lisa Johnson (Matt), Jeff Vincent (Donna), Lori Reese (Hyrum), Lana Meyer (Don) and Tsenu Mamo (Jennifer), as well as his twin brothers, Ray and Roy; and many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his parents, William and Myrtle Vincent; his brothers: Ivan, Gordon, Frank; and his sister, Clara; as well as his granddaughter-angel, Sheila. What a joyous reunion is happening.
Waldon’s family would like to express sincere thanks for the loving care he received at Hearthstone Manor, with special thanks to aides, Kacey and Val, as well as to his amazing nurse and his aide from Utah Home Health and Hospice, Amanda and Courtney.
A Graveside Service will be held Friday, July 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spanish Fork City Cemetery. There will be a visitation Friday morning, July 15th, from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, prior to the graveside service. There will also be a visitation Thursday evening, July 14, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.at Walker Funeral Home, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah.
