Vickie Mitchell Jones was born on March 23, 1950, in Provo, Utah. As the seventh of eight children to Brig and Mary Mitchell, she quickly learned two essential life skills: how to hold her own and how to perfect the art of sarcasm. Both served her exceptionally well throughout her 76 years.
Vickie spent much of her life shaping young minds working in public education and occasionally attempting to shape the behavior of everyone else around her. While many knew her as a dedicated church member, others knew her as an avid golfer who firmly believed that the shortest path to heaven was somewhere between the first tee and the eighteenth green.
She found peace working in her flower beds, despite a seemingly endless battle against stray baseballs or basketballs that regularly undid her hard work. Yet, like everything else in life, she approached the challenge with determination, grit, and probably a sarcastic comment or two.
Vickie loved the mountains. Whether she was camping in them, watching her children play sports beneath them, or simply admiring them from her back porch, they brought her joy and perspective. They were one of the few things capable of earning her complete approval.
For everyone else, there was “The Look.”
Those who knew Vickie understood exactly what that meant. Sometimes it was a look of sarcastic annoyance. Other times it was a look of profound disappointment capable of correcting poor decisions faster than any lecture ever could. Parents wished they possessed such power. Grandchildren learned to recognize it early.
Speaking of grandchildren, nothing brought Vickie greater happiness than spending time with her family. She faithfully attended sporting events, church activities, family gatherings, and the legendary Christmas parties and Sunday dinners where “appropriate” was more of a suggestion than a rule. She loved every minute of it.
Family was always Vickie’s greatest treasure.
On September 10, 1969, she married the love of her life, Gregory Ross Jones, in the Salt Lake Temple, beginning a partnership that would span decades and create a remarkable family legacy.
Vickie is survived by her children, Jefferson Ross (Sheri) Jones, Leslie Jones, William Coby (Sarah) Jones, and Benjamin Mitchell (Jessica) Jones; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson, all of whom carry forward her strength, humor, loyalty, and occasional well-timed look of disapproval.
While her family mourns her passing, they take comfort in knowing that heaven has gained a sharp wit, an excellent golfer, a master gardener, and one woman who will undoubtedly have the angels standing a little straighter whenever “The Look” appears.
We’d like to express our deepest appreciation to Chelsea (hospice nurse and staff), Holly (primary care nurse), and the numerous CNA’s at Spring Gardens current and former staff who have loved and cared for Mom over the past 3.5 years. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A graveside service will be held Thursday June 11, 2026 at 10am at the Orem City Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
