Our family patriarch was called home to his Heavenly Father on November 15, 2021, at 93. He is much beloved by his immediate and extended family, friends, and neighbors of Elk Ridge and Granger, Utah (West Valley City).
He was born in March of 1928 in Pomerene, Arizona to Rita Scott and Paul Gaines Miller. He liked to tell people he was the second of fourteen children. He is survived by six siblings (Ethel, Ann, Melvin, Irene, Joseph, and Mary). He is also survived by his five children, (Jacqueline, Deborah, Jeanne, Bernice and Paul), his eighteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
He grew up during the depression. His family moved to Arkansas when Arizona ran out of water to raise crops. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. After returning from the military, he attended BYU and Utah State University, where he met his wife to be, Anita Bartholomew, on a blind date.
After they were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple, he graduated from USU and became an Industrial Arts teacher. He taught in Roosevelt, Utah, at Granite High, and for the rest of his career at Granger High School. He also worked construction jobs on the side and in the summers. Vernon unselfishly served his neighbors, family, and fellow Latter-Day Saints all his life, and served as Bishop of the Granger 7th Ward.
He lovingly cared for his wife Anita for many years before her death. He was a man of many talents and passions, especially with wood, and tools, and loved to do things for others. He had a big green thumb and the best garden in the neighborhood.
A viewing will be held at the Walker Funeral home in Spanish Fork on Tuesday, November 30, from 6 until 8 in the evening. A second viewing will be held at the Jordan 4th Ward building at 4270 Falcon Street in West Valley City from 9:45 until 10:45 in the morning of Wednesday, December 1, 2021. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 1, at 11 o’clock in the morning following the viewing. He will be buried in the Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery.
