Vernile Odell Gasser May 5, 1934 - March 9, 2023

Services will be livestreamed. Please return to this obituary page Wednesday morning, March 15, 2023 shortly before 11:00 a.m., and click on the link below, to view the broadcast:

Vernile Odell Gasser was born May 5, 1934, in Payson, UT, to Ernest Wayne Gasser and Verda Leona Huff.  He passed away in the home that he built, surrounded by his loving family, March 9, 2023, in Elk Ridge, Utah, of congestive heart failure.

He graduated from Payson High School with the class of 1952.  He then married his high school sweetheart, Doris Badham on January 16, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  Together they had five children: Vicky, Brian, Suanne, Lisa, and Gina.

He grew up a true cowboy in Haskellville on Salem Canal Road where his first job was delivering newspapers on horseback. As the youngest of four, his curious nature often led to mischief.

He had an enduring testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ.  In his words, “I always wanted to be good.”  He served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including counselor in the Bishopric, and in the Stake Presidency.  His favorite calling was being an Explorer Adviser in the Scouting program.  He eventually earned the Silver Beaver Award.

After he retired from Geneva Steel in 1987, he started his own Real Estate Brokerage, South Rim Realty. He valued integrity, honesty, and fairness in all aspects of his life.  A successful businessman, he was also an ardent outdoorsman loving his time spent fishing and hunting in the mountains on horseback. He enjoyed hard work and instilled that value in his posterity.  He was a great trouble shooter and could fix anything with bailing twine, epoxy, and a lot of ingenuity.

He never met a stranger he didn’t know and made you feel important no matter the conversation.  Special friendships made in childhood continue today: Tuesday card groups, fishing trips, hunting adventures, and even drives around Utah Lake brought him joy.

He loved his children and was the ultimate teacher.  There was never anything he wouldn’t do for his family.  He is survived by his children: Vicky (Robert) Mather of Smithfield, Utah; Brian (Kristen) Gasser of South Jordan, Utah; Suanne Rosenbaum of Elk Ridge, Utah; Lisa (Mark) Peterson of Elk Ridge, Utah, & Gina (Kyle) Jordan of Smithfield, Utah. His posterity includes 25 Grandchildren and 43 Great Grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Doris, a grandson Ryan Christensen, a granddaughter Olivia Leach, and a son-in-law Don Rosenbaum.  He was also preceded in death by his siblings Leila McDonald, Nelda DeGraw & LaVell Gasser.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 75 South 600 East, Payson, Utah. We will miss him very much. Had a lot of good times going to Junction with Doris and Vernile on many many, trips. Mexico, Northwest, Death Valley, & etc. Many many many chess games and cards with the group (Doris, Vernile, Reed & RayAnn Page, Bob & Lois Menlove. The group still plays but will be hard to carry on. Went flying one time spotting Ducks along the River and Vernile loved that. His best prank on me of all time was when he has his Cabin Cruiser . He got up before sunrise and said “let’s go fishing and the boat was still on the trailer. He went out to relieve himself and I threw on my close and followed. He went back what I thought to get dressed. So I waited & waited & waited & no Vernile. Went back into the boat cabin only to find Vernile fast asleep.😳😎😂. Needless to say we had a lot of fun fishing, hunting, & travel trips I will Never forget. THANK You Doris & Vernile for your many times of enriching out lives with your Love & Friendship. We will miss you both. Kathy & Kent

A great friend, a great neighbor and someone we could always count on to have the answers to some of our dumb questions. Vernile was a great man who would always take the time to help our family out at every turn. From the day we moved in next door to Vernile and Doris they always made us feel like family and were there for us.

The many evenings we sat on the front porch with Vernile and talked about everything and anything were some of our favorite times of the day. The pearls of wisdom Vernile shared along with his open heart are virtues that were great examples to our family.

From the entire Mittelman Family to the Gasser Family our love and prayers are with you at this difficult time. We are so blessed having them as neighbors.

I would like to leave my Condolence to whole Gasser Family. Thank you for sharing your Mom and Dad with my Mom and Dad. Thank you for all the great times we shared as youngsters on our many camping trips. As I grew older I was able to share fishing trips, hunts and spending time in Junction with Vernile. I remember when camcorders came out that you would never catch Vernile without one on his shoulder recording the days adventure. I remember fishing trips to Otter Creek sitting on the bank and visiting with Vernile for hours while Dad sat just down the shore and they hardly said a word. I appreciated Vernile’s friendship and will miss his adventurous and big personality. He will be missed.
