Sylvia May Powell, 55, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 26, 2024, after a brave two-year fight with cancer. Sylvia will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, strong spirit, and love for her Savior.
Sylvia was born March 27, 1969, to Grant and Arlene Andrus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Pitman, New Jersey, with her four sisters and one brother. Her childhood was spent enjoying the nearby forests, singing with her family, playing with the family dog Pebbles, and enjoying church activities. She graduated from Pitman High School in 1987.
While studying Art at Brigham Young University, she met her eternal companion, Don Powell. They were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 26, 1989. Don and Sylvia had nine children. Her family was her greatest joy, and she nurtured her children with love and care. She loved hiking, art, music, dancing, climbing, singing, the temple, family history, and spending time with her family. She dedicated most of her life to her children, whom she loved dearly and would do anything for them.
Sylvia was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in various callings throughout her life. Her favorite callings include serving with children, music, and being a temple worker in the Payson Temple with her husband.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors who cared for her in her last years.
She is preceded in death by both her parents. She is succeeded by her husband of 35 years, Don Powell, and her children, Crysta (Daxton), Chloe (Taylor), Belle, Ellie, Anna, Hans, Gabrielle, Daniel, and Phoebe. As well as her siblings, Erica (Ed) Ledek, Thaila (Jack) Taylor, Amanda (Bryan) Earl, David (Joyce), and Julia.
Viewing services will be held Thursday, October 3, at 9:30 am at a chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 1215 N 1000 W St, Mapleton, UT 84664.
After the viewing services, funeral services will be held Thursday, October 3rd at 11:00 am at the church.

September 29, 2024 at 7:55 pmI was in Silvia’s ward off and on over the last 24 years—they just kept changing the boundaries. When I had a chance to see her weekly, she always had a smile for me. When I was a Sunday School teacher years ago, she was in the class. She always had heartfelt, enlightening comments to make. It helped me prepare lessons to think about the uplifting things I knew she would say. She was a pure soul without guile.
