Our beloved Stephen Vance Poll, surrounded by his loving wife of 50 years and his family, returned to his heavenly home on February 19, 2022, at the age of 76.
Born on November 9, 1945, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve was the fifth born of ten children to Harry Nicholson Poll and Grace Maurine Vance. Steve grew up in the Sugarhouse and East Millcreek Canyon areas. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers David, Ronald, and Richard; sister Judy Hutchings; brothers-in-law Steven and Mel Hawkes; daughter Wendy Todd, and fur-baby son Miko-San.
Steve graduated from Skyline High School then later worked at Kennecott Copper Mine. He was very patriotic, loved his country, and served in the United States Air Force for four years. He graduated from Brigham Young University – Provo with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting.
While at BYU, Steve randomly knocked on the door of a beautiful, single mother of two daughters, inquiring if there were any available apartments for rent at the Family Tree Apartments. Shortly after, he secured an apartment directly below Judith Faye Stoker. It wasn’t long before they began dating and within that same year, were married and sealed for eternity in the Manti LDS Temple on June 11, 1971. They are the parents of seven daughters: Kimberly Chaus (Gus), Wendy Todd (Jefferson), Trisha Harward (Terry), Lisa Whatcott (Chet), Gina Steverson, Melanie Fisher (Jeremy), and Cherise Richards. They raised their family in Utah County, St. George, and in 1979 moved to Vista, California, until 2017 when they returned to Utah to retire in Spanish Fork.
Steve was a Public Accountant for 45 years. His childhood experiences with his father’s Poll Sound and Music business inspired his passion for audio, visual, music media and equipment. Steve loved to travel, socialize, sing, create musical performances, spend time with family, eat good foods, ride motorcycles, and enjoy his cars. Steve loved to throw parties – at church, home, the pool, the beach, and he made a mean hamburger. Many great times were spent on the waters of Lake Powell as well as several memorable family trips to Utah, Hawaii, Ohio, and the East Coast. He especially loved the Church History tour with his wife. Steve was a 1st place 4H competitor. He played the trumpet, and he was a life-long singer with special choral groups. He loved his family and was very affectionate. They meant everything to him and him to them. One of his main passions was supporting his daughters in all their musical endeavors and extracurricular activities. He would do anything for others. He served endlessly and he gave all he could – sometimes to a fault.
Steve was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When called upon by ecclesiastical leaders or neighbors, he was there to serve. His faith never wavered. He was a man of pure heart that loved his Savior and was a great example to all that knew him. He served as an Air Force and Ward Choir Director, as well as a Stake Music Director for more than 40 years. He served as a Counselor in the Bishopric, a Priesthood teacher, a Young Men’s advisor, a Stake auditor, and an Elders Quorum counselor. Steve was an ordinance worker in the San Diego Temple and enjoyed every minute of it. He was an Eagle Scout and was involved in the Scouting program where he helped Scouts earn their merit badges. He also organized the Stake Fall Festival Program of Music and Art along with countless stake performances and Christmas programs.
Survived by his wife Judi; sisters, Nancy Swenson (Val), Rosemary Hawkes, Carole Hoyt, and Margie Hawkes; brother Robert (Christi); brother-in-law Kent Hutchings; and sister-in-law Mary Poll; fur-baby son, Murph-Man, 21 grandchildren, who all adore their Bompa: Christopher Chaus (Vas), Anastasia Chaus, Alexia Kyriazi (George); Shanel Anthian (Josh), Aubrey Hourlier, Joshua Hourlier (Olivia); Morgan Erickson (Brigham), Lauren Ashcraft, Halle Ashcraft, Ella Ashcraft, Avery Ashcraft; Racquel Whatcott, Ariana Whatcott, Paxton Whatcott; Kirsi Steverson, Emma Burgos (JJ), Norah Steverson, Micah Steverson; Jaydon Fisher, Briana Fisher, and Emily Fisher; and 5 great-grandchildren: Amalia Chaus, Constantine Chaus; Jasper Anthian, Cosette Anthian, and Jace Anthian.
Services will be held at Aspen Heights 2nd Ward Chapel at 1911 E 1850 South in Spanish Fork, Utah on Saturday, February 26, 2022. A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 10:50 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

February 27, 2022 at 9:55 pmDear Poll family, today I just learned of Steve’s passing. I am sorry for your loss, yet happy to know he has moved on to now be healthy and happy again. Upon moving our family into the Vista 1st Ward during the 1990’s, I distinctly remember the caring warmth he showed to everyone. He was generous with his greeting to others and quick to laugh. As a mission gift to our son, Steve paid for a whole month of his mission. This generous gift, given silently, still brings me to tears almost 20 years later. I loved hearing him sing and watching him lead our small Ward choir. As the choir director of often a small group of singers, Steve directed with enthusiasm and respect for those of us much less trained in music. I do feel blessed for having known Steve. He was an example of showing he cared with warm love for others and generosity beyond belief. How grateful I am that my family was able to share part of life’s journey with the Poll family.
