Samuel Purnell Roberts was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on August 19, 1926 to Joseph and Lydia Purnell Roberts. He was a member of the Eagle Park Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was married to his sweetheart, Carol Leary, of Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 15, 1950.

Sam is a U.S. Navy Veteran of two wars. He served aboard the destroyer, the U.S.S. Massey in the Pacific theater during the Okinawa Campaign of World War II, and aboard the ammunition ship, the U.S.S. Ranier in the Korean Conflict.

He received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Utah with the graduating class of June 1956, and took a position as a civil engineer with East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, California, where he worked 32 years until his retirement in 1988. At that time, Sam and Carol moved to Escalon, California where they built their dream home.

Sam wore many hats in his life of 96 years. The one he wanted to wear the most was the proverbial 10-gallon hat, the white one that cowboys wear. He loved camping and taking the family on weekend or vacation trips anywhere from California to Alaska or trips to Utah to visit family.

After moving to Utah, he often met up with friends and relatives at CostCo in Orem.

He is preceded in death by his parents, all six of his siblings, and bis first wife, Carol Leary; as well as his second wife, Wilma Ruth Eustice. He is survived by his four children: daughter, Jean Joseph and her husband, John; Ida Hayes; Mark Roberts; and Ken and his wife, Corrine. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park, 1711 South Camp Williams Road (1700 West), Bluffdale, Utah 84065
