Rulon Scott Linford, known as Scott, passed away on August 27, 2025, on the Diamond Fork Discovery Trail east of Mapleton, Utah, at the age of 58. Born April 12, 1967, in Boston, Massachusetts, Scott cherished his childhood in the city. At age six, Scott’s family relocated to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where he discovered a lifelong love for hiking, skiing, and the outdoors. Many happy adventures were spent running up and down mesas and mountains with friends Patrick McRoberts, Rob Cofelt, and Allen Pack.
Scott served a mission in the Colombia Cali Mission, where he built a tender appreciation for the people and culture. He attended Brigham Young University, studying computer science. He met Krista Juanell Savage. They married in the Salt Lake Temple. Scott and Krista share a son, Matthew Linford.
Scott built a successful career as a Software Engineer. He worked for a variety of organizations ranging from large corporations such as IBM to small startups. He had a capacity for staying ahead of innovation, seeing what was coming before it happened.
He enjoyed working as a team and was a kind manager.
Scott’s passions included hiking, learning, and caring for animals. He was happiest delving into books and research, always seeking knowledge and new perspectives.
He is survived by his wife Krista Juanell Linford; father Rulon Kesler Linford, mother Cecile Tadje Linford; son Matthew Scott Linford, daughter-in-law Cammie Akiko Steimle, grandchildren Atlas Scott, Sage Toshiko, and an unborn grandson due in November; and siblings Laura Linford Williams, Hilary Linford Henderson, and Philip Leon Linford.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, at the Spanish Fork First Ward chapel. All who knew Scott are welcome to attend.
Our family extends our profound gratitude to the Utah County Search and Rescue Services, Police and Sheriff departments, family members, and the greater Spanish Fork hiking groups and community who searched tirelessly for Scott.
