Flowers, fresh baked bread, perfectly curled hair, music in the background, smiles, and warmth are but only a few of the attributes that made up the incredible woman we lovingly know as Roxann Barney. Her sweet spirit and genuine love and care for others made this earthly world feel like heaven on a daily basis. Being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and teacher were her favorite and most cherished titles.
Roxann was a beautiful artist. Whether it was paint, fabric, flowers, or with food, she made everything in life a little brighter, more beautiful, and full of love. She was a meticulous record keeper, just like her mother Harriett, and she was a busy body like her father Garth. She loved to start her day with her “walking girls” waking up before the sun came up. Her makeup and hair done by 7am, on her couch reading her scriptures by 7:10am, and making a hot breakfast for whoever was there that day.
The Lord came first in her life and everyone around her knew it and felt Him through her. Rod and Roxann were married in 1975 in the Salt Lake City Temple. She loved her callings in Relief Society and Young Women’s, especially her time spent at Camp Koholowo. She served two LDS Temple missions (Palmyra Temple, Washington D.C. Temple, and Boston Temple) with her husband Rod and quickly developed a love for the East Coast. Tandem bike rides by the river in Palmyra New York, the beauty and extravagance of the D.C. Temple, and their loving missionary friends in Boston were what she reminisced about.
Patience was a virtue that she had in abundance and it showed in her everyday life. So, naturally, she became the best preschool teacher to most of Salem from the years 1988-2015. Some will remember the field trips to the grotto, many the homemade snacks, but they will ALL remember that they could be away from their mom & dad and they would be so loved by Miss Barney.
We always teased Mother that she would be “twinkled” early because there wasn’t a more angelic person on Earth and I guess Heavenly Father agreed. Alzheimer’s may have been his way of taking her early and at times it may have been frustrating, but in the end it allowed all of us to give our sweet mother back a small portion of what she had spent her life doing: Serving others.
“Grandma Days” were a priority because they were her greatest treasure. Her grandchildren loved gingerbread houses, noodles, applesauce with ice cream, trips to the grotto, her love of treats, and precious snuggles. Her children loved the memories of Lilacs, swing sets, the metal slide, gingersnaps, rice pudding, and ordering dessert first!
Words will never express how much she will be missed! This Earth life would never have been long enough, so thankfully we get her for eternity. Her presence in our life has been our greatest gift. She is preceded in death by her parents Garth and Harriett Hill. She is survived by her husband Rod, son Kyle (Pam) Barney, daughters Jeana (Jon) Haderlie, Rebecca (Brett) Christensen, Teresa (Nate) Reese, her grandchildren, and her siblings Ron, Dave, Lynette, Gordon, and Justin. In the words of her favorite Hymn, “Oh what joy this sweet sentence gives, I know that my redeemer lives.”
We love you sweet Roxy

August 3, 2022 at 6:59 pmMrs. Barney was such a wonderful preschool teacher to my daughter Katie who has Type 1 Diabetes. She didn’t even blink an eye when I told her about it and she quickly got trained on how to take care of her. Katie loved going to preschool and most of all loved her teacher!! We love you Roxann and will miss you!!

August 3, 2022 at 10:09 pmRoxann was a preschool teacher for both my daughters who just adored her. She was so patient and kind to them. She was also a friend who was always more interested in asking about how I was doing and what my kids were up to rather than talking about herself. What a beautiful person she was, inside and out. My sincerest sympathy and condolences to the whole Barney family.

August 4, 2022 at 1:32 amI got to serve with Roxann in Beehives. She was the counselor and I was the advisor. That was a hard calling for me, but she made it easier with her grace ash’ and love for me and for the girls. She always had a smile on her face. I remember when she memorized the song “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.” It truly was her favorite hymn, and she lived like it was. She was a sweet example to me at a difficult time in my life. I’m so glad to have known dear Roxann.

August 4, 2022 at 7:55 pmWow, what a beautifully written tribute. I know the subject matter, Roxann, was very easy to write about, but that was such an amazing tribute. As one of my older cousins, I always looked up to and admired Roxann. What an “elect lady”. Her parents, siblings, children and Rod were definitely blessed and elevated by being so close to her throughout her life. I pray for peace and comfort on the family and wish we could come to the services.

August 6, 2022 at 4:09 amWow, did I love this wonderful lady. I had a very good cry the day I read about Roxann. There are so many memories being a teenager with her. She is so sweet, caring and full of fun. So pretty and loving to others. It has been years with short visits. I know she loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. I send my prayers to all her family to have comfort hearts and peace. She loved her savior as a young lady in MIA and now she is with him❣️ Sorry Rod, I will not get to come and tell Roxann that I love her.

August 5, 2022 at 10:54 amI had a good cry when I saw Roxann’s obituary. She and her family were good neighbors across the street when we were growing up. Her family moved to Salem, Utah about the time I got married. We didn’t keep too closely in touch but I know Jody Keys knew how things were going.
I have many cherished memories of Roxann but there is one that I still smile at and sometimes I laugh. Roxann, Jody, and I were in my backyard and they finally talked me into climbing over the taller chain link fence. I managed to end up holding onto the fence upside down. I started to laugh so there was no point trying to get off the fence myself. I needed the help of both my friends to get off the fence. That must have been some sight. I wanted to share something fun.

August 7, 2022 at 4:56 amFor years I was greeted at the Provo Temple by this angel of a woman every Friday morning. I didn’t know her name but I looked forward to her smile and her warm welcome. She was confident and loving and the light of Christ shined through her. As time went on I became an ordinance worker and worked with Rod who also had an incredible light about him and was a humble servant who was willing to do anything that needed to be done. It may have been four years before I saw them leaving the temple together one day and realized for the first time that these two people that I loved and admired so much were actually married to each other. I was blown away. Of course, two of the holiest people I knew belonged together. What a pair! We continued to work together for over a decade and I can honestly say they are two of the finest people who ever walked the earth. Roxann made me a better person, just by being in her presence. I will miss her dearly.
