Roger Dee Thurgood passed away on July 24, 2023, in Spanish Fork, Utah. Roger was born in Provo, Utah, on February 18, 1965, to Ronald Dee Thurgood and Jacklyn Kay Cox. Roger spent his younger years in Provo. When his mom and dad divorced, his mom married John Hinckley. Roger was raised on the Hinckley Farm in west Provo with his three brothers, one sister, and MANY cousins. Some of Roger’s fondest memories were of his time on the farm.
Roger attended Provo High School. He was active in the FFA as well as the South Utah County Rodeo Club. He traveled with his buddies to various rodeos throughout high school and after high school.
Roger met his future wife, Kathleen, on Center Street in Provo, Utah. When they met, he told his friend that she would make someone a good wife one day. Fortunately, they met again a month later on Main Street in Spanish Fork, Utah. They were together constantly. They married in American Fork, Utah, on January 18, 1988. They were later sealed in the Timpanogos Temple on May 18, 1999. They had two children, Tucker Dee Thurgood, and Tyree Caroline Baird.
Roger had a love for life. He was always looking for the next big adventure and every day seemed to bring an adventure of some sort to Roger. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed riding horses, he was an avid waterfowl hunter, and he looked for “Cool” rocks everywhere he went.
Roger had the ability to make friends with everyone he met. He would lure people in with his various stories (most of them were true). He was always a champion of the underdog and he tried to instill that belief in his own children.
Most of all, Roger loved his family. He loved spending time with his children and his grandchildren. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He loved sharing magic tricks with them, supporting them in their various sporting activities, and just holding them.
Even though Roger was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he enjoyed attending various churches. He loved his savior, Jesus Christ.
Roger will be missed by many people, but his spirit and his stories will live on.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Holt Thurgood, his children, Tucker (Mandi) Thurgood and Tyree (Joshua) Baird. By his grandchildren, Dallas Thurgood, Hagen Thurgood, Harper Baird, and Berkley Baird. He is also survived by his father, Ronald (Becky) Thurgood, by his dad, John Hinckley, and by his brothers, Randy Hinckley, Chad Hinckley, and John Hinckley, and his sister, Annie Robichaux. Roger is also survived by his many nieces and nephews whom he adored. Roger was preceded in death by his grandson, Everret Jameson Baird, and by his mother, Jackie Hinckley.
There will be a visitation Friday evening, July 28, 2023, where family and friends may gather at the LDS Church on 381 East 400 North, Spanish Fork, Utah, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. Another visitation will be held Saturday morning, July 29, 2023, from 9:30 a.m.– 10:45 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah. Following that visitation, a funeral service will be held, also at the funeral home, starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023.
