It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Sterling Madsen, lovingly known as Bob, who passed away peacefully at his home in Spring Lake, Utah, on March 16, 2025, just shy of his 75th birthday.
Robert was born on March 29, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Richard William Madsen III and Ruth Lee Madsen. He grew up in Utah, graduating from Olympus High School before earning a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and later an MBA from the University of Utah. He dedicated his professional career to the insurance industry, where he worked diligently to support his family and serve his community.
A man of faith, Robert was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His dedication to his church was exemplified through his willingness to serve in many callings. He frequently shared fond memories of his missionary service in Bolivia and enjoyed the camaraderie of serving as a financial clerk in his ward. Robert had a strong testimony and understanding of the gospel and loved sharing his knowledge with his children.
Robert had a passion for architecture, trivia with a focus on geography (he always had a quiz question available), reading literary classics, and caring for his property, where he planted thousands of trees and shrubs over the years. He loved watching sports and, most of all, spending time with his family. His hands were never idle; he enjoyed carpentry, tending his land, and cheering on his favorite team.
Robert’s legacy lives on through his wife, Candace, and his children: Kammerle Schneider (Greg) Eberle, Zachary (Kristin) Madsen, Katie (David) Kittell, Hannah (Michael) Johnston, and Jacob Madsen. He is also survived by his nine adored grandchildren: Sterling, Kaizley, Lucia, James, Nathan, Alice, Benny, Eden, and Tommy; his siblings Richard, Daryl Eatough, and Marcy Gregg, as well as his lifelong friend and beloved brother, Michael.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruth Madsen, and his siblings Melvin, David, and Katherine.
Robert leaves behind a legacy of hard work, faith in Jesus Christ, and the ability to find joy and humor in almost all situations. His quiet strength through times of adversity will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 12625 South Spring Lake Road, Spring Lake, Utah. Visitation will be prior from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson, Utah.

March 19, 2025 at 8:08 pmI’ve got fond memories of my cousin Bob going back 65 years! One not-so-fond memory – when we were both kids (him probably 10 or 11 and me probably 8) he was slow-pitching softballs for me to catch. My catching skills were no match for his pitching skills, and I took a slow ball to the nose! I saw stars, but I believe my pride was hurt much more than my face.
Bob was ALWAYS a kind-hearted soul and one of our favorite relatives. Since we lived 300+ miles apart, we only saw him in the summer… and usually playing pickup basketball games or tennis or softball – or fishing – with Bob and his siblings. GREAT memories!
A year or so ago, Bob traveled north to Boise and we arranged an impromptu “family reunion” – we went to dinner with him and spent several wonderful hours, catching up and reminiscing. What a blessing it was to rub shoulders with him after many years!
The Lord LOVES Bob Madsen! I’m sure he’s rejoicing “up yonder” – I pray for peace and consolation for his loved ones, until we’re all together again.

November 27, 2025 at 1:47 amCandace and family, sorry for your loss of Bob. He was a strong example to me of the finest of the LDS. I am grateful he taught me so much of his mission to 🇧🇴 Bolivia. I later was assigned there when I was with USAID for a couple of years. So grateful to have known him when I was at BYU.

December 13, 2025 at 3:52 pmI knew Bob at BYU and we lived in Miller Apts. I loved his orange VW, his sense of humor, and his quiet demeanor. I’m sorry we lose track of friends, especially since I live in Payson and didn’t know Bob and his family were so close. My condolences to you and your family.
