Richard Irwin Magoffin LIVESTREAM

Richard Irwin Magoffin passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, January 22, 2023. He was eighty-three years old. He is survived by his wife LaNay, his five children and their spouses, twenty-five grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Dick was born on October 30, 1939, in San Diego, California, to Garold and Areletta Magoffin. He was the youngest of three sons. His parents and brothers preceded him in death.

He graduated from El Cajon High School (California) in 1957 and earned a BS degree in animal husbandry from Brigham Young University in 1961. When it came time to choose between pursuing a career in professional football or serving a mission, he chose the mission. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North British Mission (1961-1963).

After dating LaNay Webb for three weeks, he decided she was the one! They were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on September 7, 1963. He loved her with all his heart and expressed that to everyone he could in the last months of his life. Together they have five children: NayLynn (Iain) Rudd, Darin (Tracie), Melanie (Scott) Hilson, Russell (Angela), and Cathy (Derek) Hable.

As a father, he loved attending his kids’ events, whether sports, music, church, school, or dance. He always supported them in their goals. Dick stood beside his kids and grandkids in their achievements and at their milestone moments. He was proud of all of them!

Dick and LaNay lived in Pennsylvania early in their marriage, but they raised their children in Southern California. Dick spent his career in sales and consulting in the agriculture industry. He also ran a pig ranch with his brothers, Gary and Don. Living on the ranch created a lot of opportunities for fun, adventure, and work for their children. In his spare time, he found enjoyment serving in the Boy Scouts organization and was happy to go along on hikes, campouts, and river rafting trips.

Dick and LaNay moved to Salem, Utah, upon retirement to be near family.

Shortly after their move, they were called to serve in the South Africa Cape Town Mission (2005-2007). They made good friends and wonderful memories during those two years.

One of Dick’s greatest loves was BYU sports. He played both center and linebacker positions for the BYU football team from 1957 to 1960, and he stayed a loyal BYU fan for life. He and LaNay spent “date nights” watching various BYU sports side by side in their home. He enjoyed being physically active and went to the gym as long as he was able. He also appreciated seeing the country as he and LaNay traveled countless miles in their RV during their retirement years.

Dick was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His strong commitment to following the Savior was evident to those who knew him, and his family will always be grateful for his devotion to the things that matter most. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 25 West Apple Blossom Way, Salem, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Salem Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to humanitarian aid through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Philanthropies or other humanitarian aid organizations.
