Raquel Saldarriaga 89 of Spanish Fork passed away January 4, 2022, with her children by her side.
She was born to the late Alejandro Suarez and Rosa Amalia Oliva, Dec. 16, 1932, in Catacaos, Puira Peru.
She married the late Angel Ignacio Saldarriaga in 1963, and they lived together in New York, New Jersey, and Utah for over forty years. Raquelita is survived by two children: Diana Melara, of Spanish Fork; Eduardo Saldarriaga of Peru. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Raquelita was predeceased by her loving husband in 2010.
Raquel was a designer at heart, organized and had her tools and utensils nearby ready to put her ideas to paper and then bringing them to life in fabrics. She worked for a well-known designing haute couture fashion house in Lima. In the US, she continued with her passion designing garments for her friends in her spare time.
For us her children, she was so loving even when she looked at you without saying a word her face radiated love. To Diana, she showed how to be a better mom guiding her and helping every time she became a mother. I never met a person as patience as her. When she was upset at us, she gave us the silent treatment. She chose not to offend anyone. I never heard her say a curse word.
As a child she hugged me when thunder made me cried. She was my partner when I watched the WWF we even wrestled each other I had so much fun with her. She was my art teacher; she was skilled with her hands. My counselor always giving sound advice. When things were hard, she showed generosity. Cannot forget to mention we loved her cooking.
As a grandma, she enjoyed being around her grandchildren. She expressed her love by designing dresses for Leslie when she was little, lucky you had your own designer! I’m pretty sure she showed her affection to Josh, Juli and Isaiah in her own special way. When I became a father, she was my babysitter, she sang songs to my kids, always hugging and kissing them. I remember getting kind of jealous and saying can I get some of that. Viejonaso (Big baby) she answered, and we laughed. Leslie, she is your Queen and indeed she was crowned queen twice in the city where she lived. Josh, she shaped you and told you what you could become. Juli, I also saw that beautiful smile when I tried to speak in Spanish too. Isaiah, when she looked at you it reminded her of me as a child.
For her siblings, always showing love and compassion. Always concern about them. Never did I hear anyone speak evil about her. She has always been admired.
As a proverb in the bible: My child, never forget the things I have taught you…We are forever thankful to our heavenly Father for the precious gift to have had Raquelita in our lives, now you are in His presence and until we meet again we will cherish your memory in our hearts. We love you.
