Randal Lee Later was born on February 5, 1963, and passed peacefully into the loving arms of our Savior Jesus Christ and his parents on
December 6, 2023.
Randy was born in Culver City, California to Jack and Diane Later. He spent most of his life growing up in Santa Monica and he was proud of his hometown. He was adored and spoiled by his parents and family growing up. He often told stories of family get-togethers at their cabin in California, playing football at Santa Monica High School, Pickle Bills, and adventures he had with his cousins and other family members.
He was proud to be part of the Santa Monica police force, a sheriff, and then his dream job as an Investigator for the county of Los Angeles. He also had many stories about his career he loved to share.
In his first marriage, he gained a beautiful daughter, Samantha, whom he loved and cherished. He loved raising her, being part of her life and enjoyed attending her extracurricular activities from childhood through adulthood.
On July 16, 2016, in the sacred halls of the Los Angeles LDS temple, he was sealed for all time and eternity to the love of his life, Patti—a moment that would forever be one of the happiest days in their lives. He gained three more children through that marriage, Joe, Hannah, and Phoebe. He never thought of them as stepchildren, but as his bonus children, and he loved them dearly. He also loved being a grandpa to Brady, Logan, and Weslie.
Leaving Santa Monica was hard for him; but he loved living in Utah, especially the mountains and the snow.
Randy was a spur-of-the-moment, adventurous guy. He also loved to snow ski in his younger years. He made friends wherever he went and was gifted with the exceptional ability to make people feel comfortable and cared for. Randy was a great mentor to many people. He was genuine, caring, kind and would drop everything to serve others. He had the craziest stories and loved to tell them. Randy was loved by so many people; children gravitated to him and he wanted to adopt every animal he saw.
Randy was an active member of his community and served on the HOA board. He also served in many different capacities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His favorite calling was being the Boy Scout Leader of Santa Monica 1st Ward. He loved everything about the church: the gospel, the people, serving others, but he especially loved God, and our Savior Jesus Christ. He honored those who served in the military, police officers, and firefighters.
Words cannot express the pain and sorrow we have at his loss. One comfort we have is that he passed peacefully in his sleep and that we will be able to be together again.
Randy is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Samantha Caldwell Later, Joseph (Alex) Parker; Hannah (David) Muñoz; Phoebe Parker and by his three grandchildren, Brady, Logan, and Weslie Parker. He is preceded in death by his parents Jack & Diane Later.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the LDS Somerset Ward, 2981 East 1660 South, Spanish Fork, UT 84660. Family and friends may attend a visitation on Monday, December 11, 2023 at the church from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and again from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services on Tuesday.

December 12, 2023 at 1:16 amRandy was a good friend and co-worker. He was extremely generous with sharing his M&M candy with me on a daily basis. He was also very generous with Christmas. Most importantly was his Godly nature. I will never forget Randy and know that he will peacefully rest in the arms of our Lord and savour Jesus Christ.

December 12, 2023 at 7:20 pmRandy and I were both neighbors and classmates who attended Will Roger’s Elementary school.Even as kids,Randy stood out not because of his size, but because he was so polite and kind to me while most of the other boys were were a bit cruel and taunt me.It wasn’t until our 30th Samohi reunion that we re-connected through Facebook. He was overjoyed to reconnect with childhood friends, especially from Will Rogers. He always paid compliments to me bringing up times he played Little League with Kevin Mc Millan,Michael Knauer,Michael Hammerich and others. He admired my grandfather being he had also served at the SMPD and my dad Robert Livingston serving in WWll. If anyone on Facebook was having a Birthday or Anniversary,he was first to give his warm wishes. He made everybody feel extra special like they were the only ones who mattered.I am so Blessed to have known Randy all these years, around 53 years, and will remember his special presence, over abundant heart, his service and will to see things through.Thank-you for being my friend. You won’t be forgotten~♡♡

December 13, 2023 at 12:43 amSo sad to hear about Randy. I knew Randy since he was a kid. I knew his Dad and Mom. What a great family. They were a family of service and giving back. Randy continued that tradition with his time at Santa Monica PD. And at every job afterwards and with LA County. He was active in the Church and always willing to help anyone in need. My sincere condolences to Patti and the entire family. Randy left you way too soon but, was probably needed up in heaven. RIP my friend . Blessed are the peace makers as they will be called sons of God.-

December 17, 2023 at 10:47 pmI was deeply saddened upon hearing of Randy’s passing. He was a great guy, always friendly, and had a wonderful sense of humor along with a vibrant personality. No one can ever deny that Randy was a true perfectionist in English grammar, especially in his English literature writing skills.
He had a remarkable command of the English language which was reflected in his thoroughness with attention to detail in his work that was no doubt clearly evident in his meticulous report-writing abilities.
I knew Randy when I worked part-time at the Miramar Sheraton Hotel in Santa Monica. He was an in-house investigator along with also being a Reserve Police Officer with the Santa Monica Police Department.
He was known for his continued report-writing expertise where his adeptness was paramount in his attentiveness to being a perfectionist in writing complete and proper police reports which were always impeccably written.
Sadly, we have lost another great friend. Rest in peace, Randy. You will never be forgotten.
Mike Hughes.
