Ramona May Asay, affectionately known as Grandma Ona, passed away on March 12, 2025, in Payson ,Utah at the age of 96. She was born on May 17, 1928 to Amos and Cloie Burgess Asay, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the youngest of nine children.
Ramona attended schools in Salt Lake City, and despite only finishing the 10th grade she continued a quest for learning her entire life. She became a master in many different areas and freely shared her knowledge with family and friends.
Ramona had a free spirit and a love of adventure, often gathering her grandchildren for road trips that created cherished memories. She was a woman of many talents, sharing her gifts with those around her. Painting was her passion, and she found joy in calligraphy, crafting and writing poetry.
Many children in her neighborhood, along with seniors in the local care centers, were delighted to receive one of her hand-painted rocks, or little decorated match boxes with candy hid inside, a small but meaningful token of her creativity and generosity. She has enriched her family members and many friends by giving them one of her beautiful paintings.
In her younger years, Ramona was part of a Polynesian dance group and worked as a model for a dress shop in Alameda, CA where she resided for many years. Ramona managed Loard’s Ice Cream in Tracy, CA and was loved by all of her customers; she also was employed by Bechtel, Corp. in San Francisco and finished her working career at UCCU in Orem, as a customer service specialist.
Ramona was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving her church community, using her talents to organize events and support those around her with unwavering commitment. She was active in genealogy and family history and was the collector of many family histories for herself and her family.
Ramona is survived by her son, Ray L. Carlsen (H. Wilma Frisby), and her daughter, R. Juanita Christiansen. She leaves behind a loving legacy through her fourteen grandchildren, forty-four great grandchildren, and nineteen great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and an abundance of friends. She is now reunited with her children Raymond E. Carlsen and Janice C. Webster, as well as her parents and siblings.
Services will be held on March 22, 2025 at the LDS chapel at 586 W 1750 S in Payson. There will be a viewing from 9:30 – 10:45 am followed by the funeral at 11:00 am. She will be interred in the Payson, UT cemetery.
We want to express a special thanks to her hospice nurse, Mccall, and Harley and the staff from Utah Home Health Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Ramona.
Ramona’s warmth, creativity, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by her family and all those who knew her.
