Our beloved Mama went home to be with her Maker and her King on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020. It was a day she has longed for, where she is now free from mortal restrictions and is undoubtedly rejoicing with her Redeemer, and her loved ones who have been waiting for her!
Norma Jean Thomsen Aitken Turner, 88, was born Sept. 12, 1932 to Edward Christopher and Carrie Amelia Webb Thomsen. She was the youngest of 5 children. She had loving parents and a happy childhood in Benjamin, Utah, where she learned the art of a good work ethic, and where she made many life-long friends. Norma Jean was a graduate of Spanish Fork High School. She married Bert Aitken June 1, 1950 and they moved next door to her mom and dad in a family home. Norma Jean and Bert had 7 children, one of which died at age 2.
They moved to a larger home in Benjamin and settled in to raise their family. Many happy memories were made in that home and community. She loved to grow flowers, a garden and can its fruits, crochet, teach her children, visit on the front porch and host family parties. She divorced in 1973, but continued to live in Benjamin for many years.
Norma Jean went to work for the first time in 23 years at Fritzi’s sewing factory, and then Barbizon’s in P.G. and one year later was a manager there. She later worked at Payson Hospital in Admitting, and it was there she met an amazing man, Cliff Halstead. They were married May 12, 1984. They moved to Provo and she began working at Central Utah Medical Clinic, until retirement. Cliff and Norma were perfect for each other and enjoyed life to the fullest! She was excited to learn to fish and camp, hike, and to just relax. Through Cliff, Norma Jean met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, which began a whole new life for her. She loved bible studies in her home, taught her grandchildren, and was passionately learning of and sharing Jesus.
After Cliff passed away and she retired, she met and married Kyle Turner, who was a great companion and with whom she learned a love of traveling, going to such places as Alaska, Prince Edward Island, and the islands of the Caribbean. After Kyle’s death she went to work at Sam’s Club, making new friends as she handed out samples of food for 7 years.
Norma Jean continued to live on her own for many years, enjoying life, until just the last few months. She was faithfully taking care of Miss Kitty (and orphan neighborhood cats), her roses, attending Calvary City on a Hill Church, baking, being a loyal JAZZ fan to the end, attending to any need of others she could, and becoming our prayer warrior! Her family was very close and meant everything to her, and they were privileged to be able to help her at the time of life when she could no longer take care of herself.
Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ray and Bill Thomsen, sisters Dora and Anna (Russell), and son Neil and daughter Karen. She leaves behind 5 children: Alan Aitken of West Valley City, Laurie DeHaas of Orem, Glen (Doris) Aitken of Craig, Colorado, Garth Aitken of Spanish Fork and Don Aitken of Spanish Fork. She has 13 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2020, 11 am at City on a Hill Church, located at 105 E. 100 N. Provo. Visitation open at 10 am for friends and family to gather beforehand to honor and celebrate Norma Jean’s life with us.
Internment will be in the Spanish Fork Cemetery.

December 22, 2020 at 2:24 pmLaurie, your mom had such a positive outlook on everything. She was kind and compassionate. She was a great example for me. We worked together at Mountainview Hospital for several years and often spoke about her family, she was so very proud of all of you. Her smile was one in a million!
