Melvyn Douglas Cloward, known as Doug, age 70, of Payson, passed away peacefully at home after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born February 17, 1951, in Provo, Utah to Melvin Lewis Cloward and Amy Ella Jarvis.
The oldest of three children, Doug developed a love for the outdoors at a young age. He was often found hiking and hunting in the mountains with his brother Paul.
In 1970 Doug served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Texas. He pursued a Master’s Degree in Recreation Education at BYU, where he created Wilderness Trek and Pioneer Trek Youth Conferences. There he helped hundreds of young adults discover a love for the wilderness and deeper understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Doug met his soul mate, Judy Babbel, in 1973. Introduced on a blind date, they quickly fell in love and were engaged within 24 hours. Today, their marriage of 48 years is blessed with 6 children and 20 grandchildren. Doug and Judy’s love of service, work, music, and the gospel continues to be a blessing to their children’s lives.
In his career, Doug was known internationally as an expert in Direct Sales. Those who worked with him were amazed by his commitment to absolute integrity and principled living. Doug was also a prolific entrepreneur, starting businesses including Wilderness Academy, Heritage Makers, Cloward and Associates, and Dream Team Life Training. The lives of countless adults have been enriched by his wisdom and mentorship.
Doug has always enjoyed serving others. He was often found with a hammer, shovel, apron, and spatula all in the same day. His epic meals and kind hospitality are cherished by all who were served by him.
In their later years, Doug and Judy served two missions for their Church in South Africa and Kentucky. They loved serving in the temple together and sharing their faith and commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Doug is survived by his wife (Judy), children (Krysti, Thayne, Marshyl, Brytt, Bryndi, Nykelle), and siblings (Paul and Amy).
