Matthew “Matt” Don Johnson December 31, 1984 - July 20, 2023

Matthew Don Johnson left us far too soon, passing away July 20, 2023 at age 38.  He was born December 31, 1984 in Payson, Utah, to Richard Arlen Johnson and Janet Marie Bahr Johnson. He grew up in Salem, Utah, with his brothers, Darrell and Merlin, and his sister, Katherine.

He received his education through the Salem, Spanish Fork, and Payson schools, graduating from Landmark High School. He attended Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah

Matt married his sweetheart, Jill Anderson, in Palmyra, Utah, August 3, 2007, and together they have a daughter, Alyzabeth Johnson.  They settled in Payson, Utah.  Matt’s wife and daughter were the light of his life.

He loved his family first and foremost and he loved being with them, as well as his brothers, hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling and just being in the outdoors.  He was also a stock car racing enthusiast, driving stock cars on tracks in Price, Delta, Ephraim, Vernal, and any other dirt tracks he could find; happiest, of course, when he could win or place.

He worked hard over the years to provide for his family, starting as an auto detailer with Davis Auto Detailing.  For the remainder of his working days, he drove truck for various trucking businesses, the most recent being Stone Pro Slingers.

Matt is survived by his wife, Jill; and his daughter, Aly.  He is also survived by his mother, Janet Johnson, as well as his brothers: Darrell (Karen) Johnson, and Merlin (Jenny) Johnson; and his sister, Katherine (Robert) Sawls.  He leaves behind many uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Arlen Johnson.

There will be a viewing held at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah, Thursday evening, July 27, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  There will also be a viewing held at the funeral home Friday morning, July 28, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.  A Graveside Service will be held on Friday morning, July 28, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem City Cemetery, 979 South 130 East, Salem, Utah.

Jill, Aly, Janet, Darrell, Katherine, Merlin,
    My heart hurts for you.
I pray God brings you comfort and peace at this difficult time.
Rely upon all the memories you have stored up for times when the sadness visits. Some may bring a tear, but most will make you smile. Know that Matt carries those same memories with him.
    God bless

He smiled his signature smile as he pulled down his old hat. I asked if this was goodbye, just a simple see you later on the other side. I asked him how is this “see you later” when you’re already gone? He said in his tone, ” Because one day we will meet again, maybe not here on earth, but one day in another world.” I asked him is so, where would we meet? Then he smiled as he looked up “it’ll be on the big road in the sky, I’ll have my 18 speed, and you’ll have your automatic with your high heels on.” (Because automatics aren’t a man’s truck) that is when I’ll see you again.” Then I watched as he pulled on his boots and walked out the door. His laugh filled filled the room. You could still smell the sent of racing fuel and gear oil. He laughed as he watched our tears fall. “Stop your crying,” he said, “I am up here with the good ol’ boy’s, catching up on lost time. Stop your tears, I have done my time on this old earth. And boy, it was one hell of a run. Stop your tears for I left with my boots on.” I’ll miss you, peace out!
