Mary Lou Milner Hutchings passed away in Spanish Fork on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at the age of 98. She was born in Spanish Fork, on March 27, 1927 in the old Hughes Memorial hospital to George J. Milner and Mary Ann Evans. She married Robert A. Hutchings on February 9, 1945 and they were sealed 3 months later in the Salt Lake temple on May 22, 1945. Bob passed away in 2008.
Her early education was in Spanish Fork, attending the Rees Elementary school, the Central school and Spanish Fork Junior High. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Mary Lou had various jobs during her life. She worked at Sut’s café in Provo early on. During the war, she worked at the Ogden Arsenal. Later she worked at Mildred’s dress shop, Robert’s Dress shop, Will’s grocery store, Circle V Meats, and in the cafeteria at Payson Hospital.
Bob and Mary had a cabin up at Strawberry and later a cabin by Indianola. Mary loved making it homey and comfortable. Children and grandchildren have many happy memories of time spent there with their grandparents.
Mary loved antiques, which is apparent if you walk through her home. She and Bob belonged to the Utah Valley Old Car Club. They enjoyed putting their antique cars in the car shows and driving them in parades. She also liked the old black and white movies. And she loved her Coca-Cola!!!
Mary Lou was very close with her sisters. They loved talking, laughing, and singing songs together. We heard lots of stories about how they sang songs on the front porch with their dad when they were young. She loved music and passed that on to her children and grandchildren. We had many happy times singing around her player piano.
She enjoyed trips to Wendover with the Senior Citizens and vacations to Disneyland with family. Her favorite ride was the Small World ride.
Because Bob was a WW2 vet, she participated in the American Legion Auxillary and supported all veteran and American Legion events. She was very patriotic! She loved her hometown of Spanish Fork, and she and Bob were chosen as grand marshals of the Fiesta Days parade. She was also proud of her pioneer heritage.
Mary Lou enjoyed keeping up her yard. Evan at the age of 98 you could find her cleaning weeds and sweeping the gutter.
She was generous, kind and friendly. She will be greatly missed!
Mary is survived by one son, Gary Robert Hutchings (Spanish Fork), on daughter-in-law, Christine Hutchings (Payson), 7 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Phyllis Peterson (Elk Ridge) and Shirley Sanford (Spanish Fork).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Hutchings, a son, Michael A. Hutchings, and a grandson, Karl Robert Hutchings; 3 brothers, Roy, Blair, and Spot Milner, and 2 sisters, Geraldine Terry and Colleen Chappel.
We would like to thank the people at Advanced Health Care of Salem and Aspen Health and Hospice for their kind care of Mary Lou. And a Big thank you to the ladies from Meals on Wheels who delivered her meals and stayed for visits and became best friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the 19th ward chapel, 585 North Main Street, Spanish Fork.
