Mary Elaine Hone April 18, 1932 - November 26, 2022

Mary Elaine Wyler Hone, of Levan, formally of Benjamin, returned to our Heavenly Father on Saturday morning, November 26th 2022. After living 90 remarkable years, she was welcomed and reunited with her parents, siblings, and many friends.

Elaine was born on April 18, 1932 in Payson, Utah, where she was raised by her parents, George A. Wyler and Mary Maria Hanks Wyler.

Growing up, Elaine was always very bright and witty, which she kept until her final days. She was a good student, graduating from Payson High School as a member of the student government, the student body secretary and the valedictorian of her class and later attended both BYU and UVSC.

Elaine married her sweetheart and eternal companion, Keith S. Hone, of Benjamin, on June 18th, 1953, after he returned from his 2½ year LDS mission to Denmark. They were sealed in the Manti Temple and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this last June.  Elaine rarely left Keith’s side, supporting his military assignments by moving with him to Kentucky and Germany,  She worked as a grocery clerk, at U.S. West Telephone Company and enjoyed her time as a secretary for Nebo School District, working with students and staff for fourteen years.  But her favorite job was  working with Keith, and then, Craig, as a business manager at their business, Hone’s Custom Kitchens, and later their wood sculpting business based at their studio in Benjamin.  Together, they taught over 2000 students, and many more by traveling across the country, including Hawaii and Canada. Elaine was a beautifully kind and caring person and she formed many lifelong friendships on these trips.  She enjoyed time at the cabin each summer with her family, and would make friends with the chipmunks and ground squirrels, feeding them by hand.

Keith and Elaine had 4 beautiful children together – Gary (Gaylynne), Steve (Elizabeth), Craig (Robin), and Kathy. Their children were their treasures and they enjoyed being with them.  After living in Payson for some time, Keith and Elaine moved to Benjamin, where they built a home and legacy for over 30 years. They then moved to Levan, enjoying family and making new friends there.

Elaine was involved with music throughout her entire life and was an amazing pianist. She played in Zeeman’s Family Band that performed for dances in many areas of Utah.  She taught piano lessons for years, and played for every ward she was a part of. She kept her mind sharp with jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles.  In Elaine’s final years, she grew to love the Colorado Rockies and Utah Jazz.  She watched every game she could and was a die-hard fan.  She was still always good for a sarcastic remark, which would make everyone laugh. She was always hilarious and good for some lighthearted teasing.  Elaine always cared deeply for and stayed in touch with her family and several lifelong friends.

Elaine leaves an amazing legacy and is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Keith, her four children and their sweethearts, 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She has instilled kindness, laughter, and love in each of them. She would say about people that she had just met, “We’re  friends, They just don’t know it yet!”

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Glenn H. Wyler, George Alfred Wyler, Wayne Edward Wyler and an older sister who died in childbirth, and her daughter in-law Linda Staheli (Gary) Hone.

Elaine was an active member of  the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had a wonderful testimony, and served in many ward and stake callings, especially in music.  Elaine and Keith also served as tour guides at the Provo Temple.

We will carry Elaine’s legacy on, while she is able to rest after living such a remarkable, loving life. We will all miss her dearly.

There will be a graveside service held in Elaine’s honor Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Benjamin Cemetery.

I don’t know if it is too late but I just found out. I used to take piano lessons from Elaine. She was always kind. She always had a beautiful smile. I did talk to her a few times in the last year. She called to check on Gerry Black. This tells you of her kindness.
