On March 16, 2025, our mother Mary Ann Cheney returned to her Heavenly Father’s side, surrounded by her loving family.
Born Mary Ann Peterson, on September 3, 1941, in Portage la Prarie, Manitoba, Canada, she was the eldest child of seven children born to Eldon McBride Peterson, a Canadian Airforce Officer, and Mirra Ann Peterson (nee: Henninger), a nurse.
Growing up in Welling, Alberta, Canada, she was a true farm girl. After graduating high school in McGrath, Alberta, she entered nursing school at Rick’s College, later transferring to Brigham Young University where she finished her nursing degree. Soon after settling in Honolulu, a pair of Sailors from Pearl Harbor moved into the apartment upstairs. One of them, Loren D.” David” Cheney would become her husband of 41 years. In 1970, the newlywed couple transferred to San Diego where David was assigned. They would spend the next 40 years in San Diego where they would raise four children and see the addition of 6 grandchildren.
When David passed away in 2010, Mary relocated to Spanish Fork, Utah to be close to her best friend Marilyn. Mary was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was a frequent volunteer at the San Diego, Provo, and Payson Temples.
