Mark J. Herbert August 7, 1949 - September 21, 2025

Mark J. Herbert was born on August 7, 1949, to Jay Mead & Merleen Thurgood Herbert, and this world was never the same. If you were privileged to know Mark, you know that his heart was big, and he was full of life. He was known by many as Gramps. He loved watching grandkids play their sports and was known to say whatever was on his mind. Grandpa loved movies so much that it became a family joke—he had pretty much seen every one ever made. He loved fishing, ping-pong, chili, licorice, gold mining, the card game Hell, dark chocolate, corn nuts, his morning coffee, and especially his cinnamon and monkfruit sprinkled on top. It was also said by many of us that he had nine lives as he defied the odds many times. He loved his family and friends deeply and left an imprint on our hearts that we will never forget.

Some of our favorite, well-known things he said often were….

If you asked how he was doing, his answer almost always was… “I’m hangin…”

If something got him excited, out came his classic… “Far out!”

At the ball-field, you couldn’t miss him cheering…“Way to chuck ’um!”

And of course, the silly lines that made us laugh every time… “Get your toe jams out of my face,” and “It wasn’t me, I didn’t do it.” “What are ya doin? Mildewin?”

And we can’t not mention his famous line when he needed something to wipe his hands on, “hand me a bar towel.”

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Merleen; his brother Kurt (Paula); his sons Timothy and Chad; his niece, Jamie, nephew, Tyler; and grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who met him at his journeys end.

Mark leaves behind his siblings, Dave (Marita), Craig, Sharr, and Chad (Tina); his children, Casey, Josh, Ambrosia (Rudy), and Whitney (Patrick); daughter-in-law Krista (Carey); many grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, and nephews, strangers that became family, along with many family members and countless friends whose lives he touched. Although Mark & Brenda divorced after 8 years of marriage, they were the grandparent pair to most of the grandkids & together were two of their biggest fans. Mark will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unforgettable smile, his laughter, and most of all, the love he carried for his family — his true gold. His love will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
