Kurt N. Losee July 25, 1979 - February 20, 2021

A golden heart stopped beating on February 20, 2021.  Kurt Nelson Losee, age 41, a devoted son, beloved brother, ultimate dad; a fun uncle, and friend to many, passed away far too young, and unexpectedly, after a short battle with pancreatitis and subsequent cardiac arrest.  He fought like the competitor he’s always been, through a two-week coma, but decided to leave his body on his own terms on a gray-clouded Saturday afternoon; we watched him leave as a beam of sunshine came through the window of his room and paved his way to heaven. We miss him so much already.

Kurt was born on July 25, 1979, in the wee hours of the morning not long after the final performance of the Fiesta Days Rodeo, where his mother got the message from him that he was ready to be born.  He was the second son of Michael and Cheris Nelson Losee  He grew up in Lake Shore, Utah, with his older brother, Matt and younger brother, Josh. When Kurt was four years old, he became obsessed with Superman; he wore the full costume day and night, only taking it off for laundering, and only then, because his grandma made him a duplicate he could wear. His mom was afraid he’d end up wearing it to kindergarten.  Luckily, he weaned himself away from that stage and replaced it with the next focus, the Denver Broncos. He had a happy childhood, roaming the backroads, fields, and sloughs spearing carp, climbing trees – much of the time with his co-horts in adventure, the Gordon boys.  He had great fun with his Losee and Nelson cousins at the many get-togethers for birthdays, Christmases and other holidays, or just plain any day hanging out together; he loved birthday dates with Grandma Nelson, playing cards and dominoes with Grandpa Nelson; stayovers at Grandma Losee’s and eating her fabulous macaroni and homemade tomato juice with homemade bread. He attended Lake Shore Elementary and Brockbank Elementary, junior high and high school in Spanish Fork, graduating with honors from Spanish Fork High School, Class of 1997. He married Jennifer Scott in April, 2004, and together they have two of the best sons, ever:  Mason and Talon.  Kurt and Jennifer divorced, but have been great at co-parenting their sons, and have remained friends.  Kurt was also married to Aubrie Frye, formerly of Mapleton, Utah; divorced December 2020.

He worked during high school for Grant and Ty Tingey at the auction. He worked part-time for Glen Larson/Frontier Trailers, transporting horse trailers around the western states; and for Shane Giles, doing the cutting and welding of poles for arenas and other ranch fencing.  Kurt worked for Spanish Fork City, Electrical Dept. for aprx. five years, apprenticing as a lineman, where he made lasting life-long friendships. Since then, his career, has been spent as a “tinner” in the commercial sheet metal trade, with Richard Ericksen/E & E Sheet Metal and then with Neal and Chad Craig/Central Utah Sheet Metal,  where he used his special aptitude for math and “building stuff”.  Kurt could figure out how to make or fix just about anything, including having skills as a mechanic, woodworking, and welding; and found satisfaction helping others however and whenever he could.

From  the time he was very young, he loved his Denver Broncos, through thick and thin.  Kurt was a talented athlete throughout his youth, playing basketball and baseball, being particularly good at pitching and batting, playing in several championship games. His only drawback in sports was that he wasn’t a particularly fast runner.  His Grandma Losee lovingly told him that he was a really good runner – he just ran a long time in one spot!  Kurt was riding a horse from the time he was a toddler, and competed at many, many 4-H horse shows with his horse, Peanuts.  He competed in high school rodeo as a heeler in team roping, learning to hone his skill with coaching from his dad, brother Matt, and a ton of mentoring from Duane Sorensen, spending countless hours over the years roping at Duane’s and Saundra’s arena. He also spent a lot of time practice roping at Ty Tingey’s arena. He continued his passion for team roping, as a heeler, in jackpots and rodeos for the remainder of his life, with highlights being competing with his brother, Matt, at the Cheyenne “Daddy Of ‘Em All” Frontier Days Rodeo in July of 2014, and several Fiesta Days Rodeos in his hometown, Spanish Fork.  Another thing he sure liked was the beaches around San Diego and the family trips to Disneyland; and he was purely happy talking with, competing alongside of, and sharing jokes and stories with his rodeo buddies, helping the Gurney family with branding, and loved roping at Steve and Karen Young’s place. He liked riding horses or four-wheelers to be in the beauty and relaxation of the mountains or deserts, camping trips with his dad and mom and brothers in early years, and later, when his sons were along.  In recent years, he found relaxation in creating a variety of sculptures using old horseshoes.

Kurt loved teaching and coaching his sons in sports, and attended every game or other school event they were involved in.  He valued a good education and encouraged his sons to be good students.  He lived in Nephi for a short time, then lived in Spanish Fork or Lake Shore the remainder of his life. After his mom moved to Spanish Fork in late 2014, he remodeled his Lake Shore childhood home in 2015, and lived there until his passing.

He is survived by his sons who were the light of his life: Mason Kent Scott and Talon Kurt Losee; and their mother, Jennifer Scott; his mother, Cheris Nelson Losee; his brother: Matt (Candice) Losee;  niece, Ashlyn Losee, and nephew, Treyven Losee, both of whom he dearly loved; his brother, Josh Losee.  Also survived by his aunt, Sharla (Jay) Thomas; uncle, Gregg (Linda, dec.) Nelson; aunt, Marilyn (Jay) Middesworth; aunt, Connie (Ray) Christensen; aunt, Kristie (Phil) Bair; aunt, Sandy (Ron) Hitchcock; and aunt, Ona Dee (Wade) Cardon; and many cousins; as well as ex-wife, Aubrie Frye.  He is preceded in death by his dad, Michael (Mike) Losee; his grandparents, Joseph Arthur and Phyllis White Nelson; and Owen Grant and Berniece Porter Losee.
