Kent Augusto Dominguez January 22, 1998 - March 1, 2020

Kent Augusto Dominguez was born January 22, 1998 in Provo, Utah. He passed away March 1, 2020, due to complications related to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). He was a student at BYU, where he was 3 classes away from graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree in English, with a Creative Writing minor. He wanted to become an author, and was an excellent writer. Kent was blessed to be surrounded by good friends throughout his life. Kent lived in Spanish Fork for the past 15 years.

One of the most precious things for Kent was his dog, Facundo. His passion was soccer and he loved watching all the Premier League games, especially Liverpool, which was his favorite team. He played in Percussion Ensemble for 6 years throughout Jr High and High School, and loved all kinds of music. His favorite group was Muse, but he enjoyed music from all genres and time periods. He enjoyed playing video games, especially Legend of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts on the Nintendo Switch, as well as Fifa on the PS4. At the age of 12, he received a wish from Make a Wish, that was all things Star Wars Legos, which he loved. He liked to arrange music, especially video game music, and enjoyed listening to all the Final Fantasy soundtracks. Kent was an Eagle Scout.

From an autobiography that Kent wrote as a senior in high school, in 2016:
“My uncle who had the same disease died in January 2014 at the age of 32 and it was very sad. It also gives me a scary perspective because I know that I won’t live as long as others but that young kind of scares me. But I’m not going to think about it too much and let the worry affect my life because it will do me no good and I just need to stay positive as I have tried to be so far. Sometimes people ask me what it feels like to be in a wheelchair or to have the problems I do, and to me, there is nothing weird or strange about it because I have not lived any other way and I have always been positive about the problems I have, and I feel like I am just a normal teenager. I understand that I have physical limitations and that those need to be accommodated for, but I do not like it when people think that I cannot think normally. I also feel that a lot of people may seem to think of my life as being hard but I do not think that’s the case. I’ve always had a really good life with a loving family and lots of friends around me.”

Although he had many physical limitations in his life, he rarely complained and he loved life. He was a joy to be around, and had a smile that would melt anyone’s heart. He will be missed.

Kent is survived by his parents, Victor and Sandra (Spanish Fork), sister, Kelsey (James) (Mapleton), half-brother, Spencer (Rachael) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado), niece, Mila, and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Kent will be buried at Larkin Sunset Gardens, in Sandy, Utah, next to his uncle, Tyler Allen Gold.

Kent was a student of mine in a Cormac McCarthy seminar a year ago. I and the other students in the seminar appreciated his positive presence and contributions to our discussions. Even though he had some ups and downs with his health during that semester, he always battled with grit and good humor and finished the course with a flourish by writing a fine research paper and helping the seminar pass their final group oral exam with distinction. I’m grateful that I knew Kent.

This is a late message. I am advisor to Inscape, the literary journal Kent worked on. He was a reliable, creative, and hard working staff member. He was also always cheerful. If he needed something, he was patient and expressed clearly what he needed. I’m sorry that I was unable to attend the service.
