Kent Alan Smith April 25, 1963 - August 4, 2021

Kent Smith was a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle who passed away at the age of 58 on August 4, 2021, in Spanish Fork, Utah. He was born in Payson, Utah on April 25, 1963, to Frank and Veloris Smith.

Kent grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah. As a young child he was very happy, social, and always willing to help others. He loved holidays and decorating as a child and would often remind his parents of the need for more holiday decorations. He enjoyed singing and was a member of the Mormon Youth Chorus. He loved spending time outdoors and was an avid scout. He spent many summers as an assistant scout camp counselor at Maple Dell. He was an Eagle Scout and helped others earn merit badges as a scout counselor.

During high school, he was a foreign exchange student in Sweden where he learned Swedish. He loved his time in Sweden and often shared fond memories of his time spent overseas. He graduated from Spanish Fork High School, and soon after served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Anaheim, California.

After his mission, he attended college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management. While he attended college, he met his wife with whom he had five children (Kimberly, Tyler, Trevor, Katelyn, Kortney).

When his children were young, he would often play games with them including frequent hide-and-seek, basketball, and board games. He always made sure that the family would hold weekly family home evening and daily prayer. He was very creative and would build unique toys for his children including a zipline, sandbox, and a large outdoor playhouse.

He loved animals. When his children were young he adopted many pets including cats, rabbits, birds, and dogs. He enjoyed outdoor activities including hiking with his children, fishing, and frequent trips to the family cabin. He found joy in journaling and left a detailed record of his life for his family.

During his professional life, he worked in several states including Oklahoma, Georgia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Utah. He primarily worked as an educator, including a special education teacher, 4th grade teacher, and a trainer for Apple.

Kent loved to laugh and was an easy conversationalist. He was very proud of his children and took every opportunity to tell others about their accomplishments. He adored his granddaughters and cherished the time he was able to spend with them. He shared his love for them with his mother frequently. He had pictures of his granddaughters throughout his room and always had a birthday card ready for them.

Kent was preceded in death by his father, Frank Smith and his sister, Karen Smith. He is survived by his mother, Veloris Smith, and his siblings Sherryl Ludlow (Doug), Amy Barfuss (Chris), and Gary Smith (Laurel). He is survived by his five children Kimberly Jaynes (Craig), Tyler Smith (Kristine), Trevor Smith (Joni), Katelyn Brinkerhoff (Jordan), and Kortney Herrmann (Nathan), and his three grandchildren, Annie, Scottie, and Lizzy.

Kent was one of our dearest friends growing up. I can still hear his easy laugh and his great imitations of the Muppet’s Swedish chef. I loved hearing his adventures in scouting and admired his dreams.

Smith Family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time. As a new father of twins many years ago, I remember Kent offering to babysit with Sonda while my wife and I went on a date. The kind gesture meant so much. He was so thoughtful. May you find peace and hope during this difficult time.

Kent was one of my best Friends, He will be greatly missed. He was always full of fun and Adventure and a joy to be with. We worked at Maple Dell Scout camp and were playing Monopoly by fire light. He looked over my shoulder and screamed. i about broke my neck turning to see what was behind me. nothing was there he laughed so hard but then we both got spooked and instead of going home in the morning to celebrate the 4th of July we left for home that night. I hope to always remember his laugh and his gift with music his wonderful family and all the good times we enjoyed together. We will all miss him Dearly. Love YOU

My heart is sad for the loss of your father. When your family lived in Wisconsin we had so much fun with your family. Kent was always up for an unplanned quick get together. His wicked dry humor and laugh I can still hear to this day. May the hand of The Comforter be with all of you to guide you through this emotional and challenging time. Hugs to all of you.

I met Kent many years ago when we were both in the choir at the Orem LDS Institute, and have so many great memories from that time. He was so much fun, and consistently kind and considerate. He was an example, always, as a gentIeman. I enjoyed performing with him, our conversations and having fun socially. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
