Surrounded by her loving family, Joyce Alexander Johnson passed through the veil on April 19,2023 into the loving arms of her family waiting for her on the other side. Joyce was born in Spanish Fork, Utah on June 15, 1931. She was the youngest child of Murphy David and Ruth Evans Alexander. She spent her youth in Spanish Fork graduating from Spanish Fork High school.
She married Paul Joseph Johnson on June 30, 953 in the Manti Temple. Making their home in Spanish Fork, they started their family of 6 children. Her oldest son, Michael Paul passed away shortly after birth. Coincidentally, she passed away on his birthday. She is survived by her other five children, Jolene (Kevin) Lundell, Susan Brierley, Kenneth (Sue) Johnson, Lorene Sweatfield and Deanne Johnson.
Joyce loved being a homemaker and her family was very important to her. Her only job outside of the home after marriage was being a lunch lady at Benjamin Elementary School. After moving her family to the farm in Benjamin, she taught her children to help in canning many of the vegetables and fruits that were grown there. She had the ability to quilt with such tiny, even stitches, it seemed that the quilts she made for many people were machine quilted. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and taught many of the youth in Benjamin to knit and crochet through 4-H and the young women’s program.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved being a visiting teacher and coordinator. Her most favorite job was being a ward librarian. She had a beautiful soprano voice that she willing shared when singing in the ward choir or Singing Mother choir. She was also a member of the DUP serving at one time as the historian/treasurer for her camp.
After Paul’s death in 1996, Mom became very active in the Senior citizens program. She often volunteered at the luncheons and enjoyed going on trips with them. She was excited to travel all over the country. She also joined a local bowling team with two of her daughters and looked forward to going each week. She made many close friends who would make sure she got to where she needed to go. She loved playing cards with her woman’s club. We would often tease her that for someone who never learned to drive, she was gone more than the rest of us.
Joyce was proceeded in death by her husband Paul Johnson, son Michael P Johnson, grandson Michael J Brierley and son in law Kevin Sweatfield. Her parents, brother and sisters also passed before her. She is survived by her 5 children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 25,2023 at 11:00 am at Benjamin 2nd Ward Chapel located at 3238 West 7300 S, Benjamin, Utah 84660. Visitation will be from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at the church. Interment will be at the Spanish Fork city cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the kind nurses and doctors at Mountain View Hospital for their tender care of their mother during her final days. In lieu of flowers, you may consider donating to help defray her funeral expenses.
