Joy Anne Richardson Hunter, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away doing what she loved on July 1, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on December 23, 1942, in San Diego, California, to Glenwood Leigh Richardson and Ruth Elaine Rugg Richardson, Joy grew up in El Cajon, California, where she graduated from Granite Hills High School.
Joy attended Brigham Young University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. She later became a registered dietitian, using her knowledge and compassion to serve others throughout her professional career. She worked at Mountain View Hospital and served as the Clinical Director for the Utah WIC program in Payson. Her dedication to health and service extended to her community, where she taught health and fitness classes and worked as an EMT on film sets.
On September 3, 1964, Joy married the love of her life, Gregg Brough Hunter, in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They held their reception in San Diego and began a life filled with love, family, faith, and adventure. Together, they raised a beautiful family until Gregg’s passing in 1982.
Joy was a woman of remarkable energy, resilience, and zest for life. An outdoor enthusiast with a deep love of nature, she hiked and backpacked across rugged terrain with friends and family, climbed numerous mountain peaks—including summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro at age 69—and cycled both competitively and recreationally, completing a 1,000-mile journey around the perimeter of Lake Michigan. As a certified SCUBA diver, she explored underwater worlds in exotic locations around the globe.
She lived a rich and varied life in Woodland Hills, Utah; Wyoming; Washington, D.C.; Oklahoma; Wisconsin; and Colorado. But no place held her heart quite like the family cabin in Brian Head, Utah, where she found her greatest peace surrounded by nature and loved ones.
Joy was a faithful and lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings but found her greatest joy working with the youth, especially as a camp director in the Young Women’s program. From 2011 to 2013, she served a full-time mission in Rancagua, Chile, where her love for people and her unwavering faith left a lasting impact. She also participated in numerous humanitarian missions across Africa and South America.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Gregg; and her dear son, Tyler Glenwood Hunter.
She is survived by her children: Tani Joy Hunter (Jerry Jones), Todd Brough Hunter (Nancy Hunter), Trevor Bradford Hunter (Holly Hunter), and Tomi Jill Moody (Kody Moody); 13 cherished grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her siblings Carolyn Eckert (Bob), Glenn “Buzz” Richardson (Kat), and Victor Richardson (Denise); as well as countless extended family members and treasured friends.
The Hunter family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Mount Loafer Ward for their loving and invaluable assistance in preparing Joy’s funeral services.
Joy Anne Hunter lived a life that inspired, uplifted, and touched all who knew her. Her adventurous spirit and loving heart will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A visitation will be held in Joy’s honor on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home located at 187 South Main, Spanish Fork, Utah.
