John Steven Allphin “Steve” August 3, 1958 - March 19, 2021

John Steven Allphin “Steve” born August 03, 1958 and passed away March 19, 2021 at the age of 62. Steve was born in Provo, Utah to Marlan Asay Allphin and Bunny “Ann” Hopkins Allphin. Steve was the second of eight children and loved his siblings dearly. He was raised in the Spanish Fork area where he attended and graduated Spanish Fork High School. Steve married Anita Lynne Robinson Allphin on July, 1st 1983.

Steve was an amazing father to his children and taught them many values in life. The lesson he instilled most of all was the true love of Christ and to love one another unconditionally and without judgement. The first of his four children Nicholas “Nic” Steven Allphin was born in January of 1985 followed by Kathleen Allphin Green in September of 1986.  On April 13, 1990 Steve was sealed to Anita, Nic, and Kathleen in the Salt Lake Temple. About one year later, his only “planned” child Daniel McKay Allphin Crosby, was brought into his world in February of 1991. Three years down the road in February of 1994, Mary Allphin Minson was born as the last of his four children. While raising his family, Steve found it important to help his children to learn the value of service, hard work, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a family the Allphins celebrated a family anniversary every April to commemorate the temple sealing and importance of family. One thing all his children will tell you is that he was an amazing dad who gave the world’s best father’s blessings.

Steve loved the outdoors and being in nature. He had a deep appreciation for the world around him and treated it with great respect. Steve made it to the top of many mountains and deep below the earth while he was caving. He was a hunter, fisher, caver, climber, hiker, spelunker, and cartographer. One of his biggest accomplishments as a hiker was climbing to the top of Mt. Whitney with his son, Nic. Yearly, all he wanted for his birthday was to go on a backpacking trip or at least camping with his kids. He inherited the gardener’s touch and his green thumb from his parents and always had an incredible garden that he shared with everyone, especially in the form of his world-famous salsa. He loved gardening, taking care of his yard, mowing the lawn, trimming trees and bushes.

Steve was well-known for being a friendly tease. He always liked to help others, but if he wasn’t teasing you along the way it wasn’t a Steve move. Steve was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many callings throughout his life. He was a second counselor in the bishopric, scout master, teacher, temple missionary and many others. Most of all, he was an impactful teacher, always learning himself, sharing his knowledge, and helping others to learn.

Music was a vital part of Steve’s life. He  was a  rocker and loved most music, from the classics to the crazy stuff, but he was never a country fan. If you took a ride with him in the car, you’d likely hear Metallica, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin or some other good old tune. He loved taking his children and wife on crazy car rides to places that tested the car’s limits, but always got them home safe.

As an avid athlete in high school who also loved his country, Steve joined the US Marine Corps at the young age of 17 without his parents’ knowledge.  The story goes that Steve told them they were signing a permission slip for a standard physical, but in reality, it was his medical release and consent form. Steve loved his country and believed in fighting for it. He received an honorable medical discharge and never fought in any battles, but had a great respect for those that did.

Although he didn’t fight in any wars, Steve was a warrior who fought a lifelong battle within himself of mental illness every day. He kept his internal battles very private from the world and many would never know he was battling anything or what he was going through. He insisted on working his whole life and never wanted to be a burden on anyone. He even continued working his whole way through treatment for stage four cancer, and won that battle, remaining cancer free for the rest of his life. Steve was exceptionally selfless and always made sure that those around him were okay before himself.

Steve is survived by his wife, Anita Lynne Allphin of Provo, Utah; father Marlan Asay Allphin of Washington, Utah; 4 children: Nicholas Steven Allphin (McKelle) of Orem, Utah; Kathleen Allphin Green (Aaron) of Payson, Utah; Daniel McKay Crosby (Tyler) of Magna, Utah; and Mary Allphin Minson (Alex) of Salem, Utah; 6 grandchildren: Dawsen Marli Green, Asay Steven Allphin, Mele Nia “Tilly” Vuikadavu, Isla McKelle Allphin,  Jacqueline Keri Minson, Barrett Blechen Green; 4 fur grandchildren: Duke “Dukey” Green, Hagrid Green, Ruka Crosby, and Dante Crosby; 7 siblings: Mary Peterson (Scott), Sue Ostler (Don), Joe Allphin (Marcie), Will Allphin (Jo Deann), Julie Dulaney (Jamie), Mark Allphin (Edna), and Kathryn Watters; as well as many nieces, nephews, and “framily” members.

He is preceded in death by his mother Bunny “Ann” Allphin, grandparents, nephew Billy, niece Megan, great nephew Ryan, and many others who welcomed him into heaven.

I’m so very sorry for the heartbreaking loss of Steve. I knew him for only a few months when we worked together at Usco/ JCPenney Logistics. What a great guy. He was easy to get along with and made working overnights fun. He was someone who made a lasting impression on me, and even though it’s been close to 20 years, I still remember him fondly.
