John D Youd was born to Thomas Leslie Youd and Mary Loretta Evans in Lake Shore, UT on August 3, 1932. He passed away March 5, 2019 of natural causes in Lake Shore, UT. He fulfilled his life ambition of dying with his cowboy boots on.
He repeatedly told his family that he loved his life, every part of it. From a young age, he loved working on the family farm and roaming Lake Shore with his friends. He graduated from Spanish
Fork High School, and then joined the army during the Korean War. He was assigned to serve in Germany with the 40th AAA Gun Battalion. He served for two years. He then served a 30-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany.
When he got home, he fell in love with Janet Bellows—he said she was the most genuine person he had ever met. They were married on June 5, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised their six children in Lake Shore.
He graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He later earned a master’s degree (giving credit to Janet for typing his thesis and crying with him over a philosophy class). He taught at Sage Creek Elementary, Lake Shore Elementary, and Springville Middle School for over 30 years. His children still meet people who were his students and loved him as their teacher.
He chose to teach school so he could also pursue his work as a cattle rancher. He was still ranching at the time of his death.
He loved people and loved to serve others and serve with others. He was on the Lake Fork Cattleman’s Association Board, Lake Shore Irrigation Company Board, and SESD board. He also enjoyed the Arrowhead Riding Club.
He served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Elders Quorum President, Bishop, High Counselor, in a branch presidency in the MTC, and Ward Mission Leader.
He is survived by his dear wife, Janet, of 60 years; his siblings Wilda Christensen and Les (Denise) Youd; his six children Shelley (Dan) DeVries, Kim (Tom) Marshall, Bryan (Debbie) Youd, Russell (Christi) Youd, Lorilee (Brian) Warren, and Jacquelyn (Ryan) Christensen; 21 grandchildren; and 15.5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Leon Youd.
The viewing will be Friday, March 8, 6-8 pm, at Walker Mortuary, 187 S Main St, Spanish Fork; and from 9:45-10:45 before the funeral at the Lake Shore Chapel, 5916 South 3200 West, Spanish Fork.
