Jimmie Laning Black November 10, 1942 - May 2, 2023

After his heroic battle with cancer, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend Jimmie Laning Black of Salem Utah passed away on May 2, 2023. He was born in Provo, Utah on November 10, 1942 to Guss Porter Black and Lois Hall Black.

Jim loved sports and was a member of the basketball team at Spanish Fork High School where he graduated in 1961. He served as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Following his service he returned home to marry his sweetheart Lynette Wride on April 29,1966 in the Manti Utah Temple. Jim and Lynette were blessed with six beautiful children, Patti, Cindie, John, Jeffrey, Allison, and Bradley.

Soon after they were married Jim and Lynette moved to Sunnyvale California where Jim worked at Hewlett Packard as a telecommunication engineer. They lived in the Bay Area for several years but missed their hometown and family so much they moved back to Salem. Jim continued in the telecommunication industry working for LDS Church Offices and then eventually Nuskin where he enjoyed the opportunity he had to travel to various parts of the world.

Spending time with family was the most important thing to Jim. Whether he was riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, drag racing with his brothers, fishing, or just telling stories at Grandma’s house on Sunday nights, family was his top priority. He loved his grandkids and was their biggest fan. He especially loved holding all the newborn babies.

Jim was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served in various callings. He and Lynette served as missionaries at the Missionary Training Center in Provo Utah and both work at the Provo Utah Temple and Payson Utah Temple.

He is survived by his wife Lynette Wride Black, 4 children Patti (Joel) Meuter, Woodland Hills, Cindie (Clay) Simmons, Salem, Rebecca (Black) Montierth, Salem, Allison (Mark) Johnson, Salem, Bradley (Shannon) Black, Salem. Three brothers, Roland (Marjeen) Black, Salem, Orlon (Jackie) Black, Salem, Vernon Black, Payson and one sister Sherrie (Kirt) Harris, Salem.

He was preceded in death by his two sons John Laning Black and Jeffrey Guss Black, his parents, and brother Norman P. Black and his in-laws Max G. Wride and Naomi Christensen Wride.

His presence on this earth will be greatly missed: however, the knowledge that he will be awaiting his loved ones with open arms is a comfort to those of us who remain on this earth and continue to prepare to reunite with him eternally.

Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Nancy Trapnell of Enhabit Home Health for the wonderful care and kindness rendered to our dad during his time at home on hospice care.  Over these past nine months she has brightened his day with her visits, helped to keep him comfortable, and most importantly has become a dear friend to him and our entire family.  For that we are very grateful and appreciative.

Family and friends may attend a visitation Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10:30-12:30 located at the Salem Church, 60 South Main Street, Salem, Utah with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m.. Interment will be held at the Salem Cemetery.

Dear Lynette and all of the family,
David and I are so appreciative of Jim’s good life and loved watching the memorial video you made of some of the special highlights. We appreciate the hard work and love you obviously put into caring for him during his struggles with cancer. You and Jim have always tried to support the Black family, and we want to do the same for you. Unfortunately, we cannot attend Saturday, but we will pray for comfort and peace to be with you during the service and throughout the coming days, months, and years. We share our faith and testimonies that families can be eternal. Much love to you, David and Phyllis (Black) Sperry

So, so sorry we missed Jimmies funeral. We had a granddaughter get married that same day. When I was a young lad, living next door to the Black’s it was extremely entertaining!! I remember a time when Jim was teasing Norman and Lois (their mom) was telling them to stop and of course, they didn’t! So she came after them with her rolling pin and they hurried and climbed up the giant tree in their yard. As she was shaking the rolling pin she said to them “Just wait until your dad gets home and then you’ll be sorry!” They spent the next few hours discussing their fate. Sure enough, when Gus got home they were given their penitence. They were the best neighbors ever! I always loved living next door and was so sad when they moved to Salem. What a wonderful family! My condolences to your whole family and know that our prayers are with all of you!
