Janis Gene Spencer Buck passed away 16 February 2019 in Mapleton, Utah, at the age of 77.
Janis was born in California, and her family moved frequently between California, Washington, and Oregon. As a child, she enjoyed Huckleberry-Finn-like adventures when her family lived on a ranch. She raised her daughter, Kim, in Sacramento, California. Janis worked as an insurance adjuster for the majority of her adult life. In 2008, she and her husband, Gary Buck, retired to Utah. In retirement, she began her own business, Grandma Buck’s Art and Photography, and taught students in her art studio in her home and in a class for seniors at the Mapleton City Hall. She also created jewelry with a southwestern style. She was a member of the Mapleton 12th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a family history consultant. Janis and Gary took frequent road trips in their RV, “The Green Monster,” often escaping the Utah winters in favor of California where the majority of their family lives.
Janis was a fun grandma who supported her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their interests and who always had an art lesson ready to teach them. She was “Grandma Buck” to more than just her grandchildren, and she shared her love with many.
Janis is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Hogge, and son-in-law, Jeffery Hogge; six grandchildren: Melinda (Jonathan) Niu, Sarah (Aaron) Clift, Joseph (Julie) Hogge, Hilary (Sean) Stevenson, Spencer (Kaely) Hogge, Bradford (Megan) Hogge; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Curtis Spencer and Marissa Spencer; one niece and four nephews. Janis is also survived by her husband, Gary, and his son, John (Arlene) Buck\; daughter, Cheryl Fetchel; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Allison and Eugene Spencer; her brother, Clark Spencer; and her stepson, James Buck.
