James Marden Broadbent April 19, 1941 - April 10, 2024

James Marden Broadbent (Jim) passed away April 10, 2024, of pancreatic cancer in Highland, UT.

He was born to Marden and Norma Nielsen Broadbent on April 19, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jim loved learning. He attended grade schools in Heber, UT, Urbana IL, Logan and River Heights and Providence, UT; he attended South Cache High School in Hyrum, UT and graduated from West High School in Madison, Wisconsin in 1959. He attended Utah State University where he played football and graduated from Brigham Young University where he enjoyed watching football and being a member of the Cougar Club. He earned his Orthodontics DDS degree in 1969 and MS degree in 1973 from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

Jim loved his profession as an orthodontist. Many of us are grateful to him for our straight teeth, perfect bites, and improved smiles. He lectured internationally and was a renowned orthodontist. After retirement from private practice, he taught Orthodontics as an associate professor at SLCC and Roseman University in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jim loved being outdoors: playing football, hunting, fishing, river-running, waterskiing, snowmobiling, and jeeping — especially JEEPING. He was a proud member of the Red Rock 4 Wheelers, and enjoyed all the trails around Moab and Rubicon.

He loved the Boys Scouts of America. He was awarded the rank of Eagle and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award. He continued to serve BSA in various capacities throughout his life.

Jim loved the Savior. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland and had fond memories of his experiences there and of his companions and the Scottish  people. He also served as a counselor in a bishopric and with the young men in scouting.

Most of all, Jim loved his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren, and was proud of them. Jim is survived by his children: Dr. Justin Broadbent, Tyler Broadbent, Lisa Fox, Jamie Washburn; and his 11 grandchildren; by his brother Charlie Broadbent and his sisters Norma Nielsen and Nancy Broadbent.

Services for Jim will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, with a viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and the funeral at 12:00 Noon at Walker Funeral Home, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, UT. Interment will be at Spanish Fork City Cemetery, 420 S. 400 East, Spanish Fork, UT 84660

The family would like to thank the staff of Highland Glen Care Center and to the Suncrest Hospice nurses, especially Christine, for their loving and compassionate care.

    Dear Broadbent family,
I am Jim’s first cousin. I don’t know if I have ever met any of you but I wanted to express my condolences to your family. I was closer to Jim’s brother Charles as we were close in age. When they lived in River Heights in Cache County I used to spend some of my summer days at their home. Sometimes we got a little too mischievous and uncle Marden would have to reign us in a bit. I remember Jim sitting me down and having a heart-to-heart talk with me when I was preparing to leave for a Mission to the Central States Mission. He had just returned from Scotland and I appreciated the advise he shared with me at that time. We will miss him and pray the Lord will bless you all with the peace and comfort you seek at this time.
