Helen Amanda Downham, a beacon of love and light, returned home to her Heavenly Father on November 29, 2025, at the age of 93. She passed away in the comfort of her home in Payson, Utah, surrounded by the family she cherished so deeply.
Helen was born on January 5, 1932, in Anderson, Indiana, to Elmer and Lauria Downey. She grew up in Anderson, where she completed her schooling and later married her eternal sweetheart, Harold. Together they welcomed three children—a son and two daughters—and spent many joyful years raising their family on a farm in Indiana. Their home was always filled with warmth, gratitude, and laughter. In their later years, Harold and Helen made their home in Payson, Utah, continuing to share their love and kindness with all who came through their door.
Harold and Helen were married on February 22, 1953, and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. Their greatest joy came through their family: Harold Francis, Debbie Lynn, and Tobie Jo.
Helen showed her love through simple, sincere acts—gentle words, small kindnesses, and unwavering encouragement. She had a gift for making everyone feel loved. Whether it was a warm hug the moment you walked through her door, a kiss on the cheek, a thoughtful compliment, or heartfelt advice, Helen always knew how to lift a weary heart. She radiated contentment and joy, and her sweetness, kindness, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Helen and Harold shared a deep love for the Lord and served Him faithfully throughout their lives. In 1986, they were called as missionaries to Jackson Hole, Wyoming—an experience that strengthened their faith and their bond. To know Helen was to know her sweet soul, her devotion to her family, and her abiding love for her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Helen is survived by her children: Harold Francis, Debbie Lynn (Steven) Larsen, and Tobie Jo (Derald) Pitts; her stepchildren: Ronald E. (Margaret) Downham and Robert N. (Kim) Downham; 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold; her granddaughter, Brittany; and her siblings.
A viewing will be held in Helen’s honor on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 9:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah. Funeral services will follow immediately, also at Walker Funeral Home. After the service, a procession will continue to Payson Cemetery for burial.
Helen’s legacy of love, faith, and gentleness will live on in the countless hearts she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Our family offers heartfelt thanks to all who supported and cared for our treasured mother and grandmother as she approached the end of her earthly journey.
