Grant Coombs Livestream Broadcast

Grant Morgan Coombs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 17, 2026, at the age of 72, surrounded by his wife and children.

Grant was born on August 3, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Franklin Morgan Coombs and Davidene Monson Coombs. While still in high school, he met the love of his life, JaLynn Terry. For Grant, it was love at first sight. The two became high school sweethearts and were married on April 20, 1972. They spent 54 years together, building a life, raising their family, and creating countless memories along the way. Through all of life’s ups and downs, Grant loved JaLynn deeply. Some of his favorite times were the simple ones—just the two of them going for a drive together.

Grant spent his adult life doing what he loved—driving. He drove professionally for many different companies and behind the wheel of just about every kind of vehicle, eventually spending 21 years with Utah Transit Authority (UTA). Driving wasn’t only his profession; it was simply part of who he was. He was especially proud that his boys followed in his footsteps and built careers as professional drivers themselves. In true Grant fashion, he didn’t just hear about their work—he popped in on them along their routes many times just to say hello and see what they were up to. Whether he was working, taking a drive with JaLynn, checking in on one of his boys, or heading out to grab a Coke and shoot the breeze with a friend, Grant was happiest behind the wheel.

Grant would be the first to admit he wasn’t perfect. He was stubborn—sometimes incredibly so—but underneath that stubbornness was a man who loved his family deeply. He genuinely cared about others and was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. More than anything, he wanted to be present in the lives of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Grant had his own way of making sure everyone knew he was paying attention. He regularly checked his children’s locations on his phone to make sure they had made it home safely and kept track of where his daughters were during their clinical rotations. He was incredibly proud of his girls as they earned their degrees and pursued careers in the medical field. His family always knew Dad was keeping tabs on them—not because he was nosy (although we might argue that point), but because that was one of the many ways he showed how much he cared.

Grant loved music, movies, golf, and a good drive. His love of music seemed endless, and he loved to sing, especially with his girls over the years. His family will forever hear his voice in the songs he loved and in the endless collection of movie quotes that became part of everyday life. His sons will remember the perfectly straight lines he left in the grass every time he mowed the lawn, along with countless other memories that could only belong to their dad.

Grant had a strong love for his Savior and served in various church callings throughout his life. His faith was important to him, and he was especially proud when his grandson, Elder Ethan Reaves, received his mission call. Watching his children and grandchildren grow, succeed, and find their own paths in life brought him tremendous pride.

Grant and JaLynn were blessed with six children: Michelle Lyn Rodeback (Brian), Phillip Grant Coombs (Shantelle), Jason Don Coombs (Monica), Kimberly Ann Reaves (Scott), Samantha Louise Derfler (Micah), and Nicholas Anthony Coombs.
His family continued to grow with 17 grandchildren: Jacob Moss (Gina), Alexandria Hess (Tyler), Alison Kinross (Logan), Corbin Coombs (Kristen), Haylee Novak (Kale), Nathan Coombs (Sadie), Abigail Coombs, Myllie Reaves, Elder Ethan Reaves, Brooklyn Derfler, Berlin Derfler, Brighton Derfler, Briggs Derfler, Kaleigh Coombs, Jackson Coombs, Atlas Coombs, and Benji Coombs; and 17 great-grandchildren, each adding to the family he loved so much.

Grant was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Michelle Lyn Rodeback, who passed away on February 21, 2022; his parents, Franklin and Davidene Coombs; and his in-laws, Don and Maralene Terry.

There are countless stories that could be told about Grant—some heartfelt, some that will still make his family laugh, and probably more than a few that shouldn’t make it into an obituary. That was Grant. He leaves behind music that will bring back memories, movie quotes that will forever be repeated, perfectly straight lines in freshly cut grass, a Coke and a drive that won’t quite feel the same, and a family who will always know just how deeply Dad loved them.

His family will miss his stubbornness, his humor, his singing, his unexpected visits, his check-ins, and simply knowing that Dad was there. Grant showed his love by being present—keeping track of everyone, checking in, showing up, and making sure the people he loved were okay.

Above all, he leaves behind the love of his life after 54 years together and a family that carries pieces of him forward in so many different ways.

And while Dad can no longer check our locations to make sure, we’ve made it home safely, we find comfort in believing that this time, Dad is the one who made it safely home.
