Grant Leroy Cook Funeral Service

Grant Leroy Cook, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 20, 2022.

Grant was born to Heber James and Jetta Cook March 24th, 1934 in Springville, Utah.  He graduated Springville High School in 1952 and joined the United States Navy shortly thereafter.  After his initial training he served on the USS Shangri-La aircraft carrier and was discharged in 1956.  While still in the Navy he married his sweetheart Grace Drollinger from Payson, Utah in 1953.  They established their first home in Seaside, California and after his military discharge they established their permanent home in Payson in 1956.

Grant is survived by his four children:  Darcy Lee (Mark) Miner of Highland, Utah; Kimberly Ann (Max) Cameron of Payson, Utah; Dayne G (Hui-Young) Cook of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Christian Dale Cook of Payson, Utah; his brother Ron (Pat) Cook, of Prescott, Arizona and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ewell of Vernal, Utah.  He also temporarily leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Grant was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in various positions including as a member of the Stake Presidency, Bishop, multiple Bishoprics, Gospel Doctrine Instructor, Ward Clerk, Counselor and Teacher in several auxiliaries.  He also served two service missions, one in the Church Employment Center, and the other at the Home Storage Center.

In addition to expertly managing the Drollinger farm in his spare time, Grant was a professional educator at heart.  He taught psychology, physics and math.  He then progressed into counseling and administration and ended his professional career as the Dean of Student Services at Utah Valley State College. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him, but his Christ-like service and stellar example will forever light our hearts and minds.

There will be a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 75 South 600 East, Payson, Utah. Grant was an exceptional man and was filled to the brim with kindness and charity. When I had my first baby, he came and left a card on my door with some money in it to buy my baby a gift. I am sure he has missed Grace terribly and although they are reunited now, his presence will be missed.

So sorry for your family but so happy for your Mom. As many of the pictures showed they were always next to each other or arm in arm. Your Dad and Mom were great people and such good examples to all around. I was able to take advantage of your Dad’s goodness in that he was good enough to allow me to ride to school with him and Darcy when I went to the Provo Tech. I had such a good time even when Darcy and I had to follow him and one of the faculty on a round of golf (the only time I went around a full size course). Just keep close the memories and draw comfort and happiness.

Uncle Grant was bigger than life to me as a child especially. I remember all the times being able to visit him when he had the farm. It was one of my favorite places to be. He was always so patient with me, showing me how to milk the cows and especially teaching me how to squirt the barn cats. Endlessly watching the trough fish with me and letting me play on the bales of hay. It was hours and hours of the most interesting educational visits. I always felt loved by uncle Grant. He taught me to be the kind of aunt I wanted to be to my nieces and nephews. We kept regular contact even after mom (VerNell) died. I will miss his calls. He had a sixth sense about me and when I needed a pep talk. I love you uncle Grant. Kiss Grace, mom, dad, Saundra and Lon and tell them I’ll see them when it’s my time.

    Darcy, Kim, Dayne and Christian,
My heart is just aching, and yet I’m so happy for your precious dad and momma.
They were always such an example.
Their love for each other is so poignantly illustrated in all the wonderful pictures.
I miss so many things about my days in Payson.
I hope you can comfort one another. Since losing my beautiful sister, Lynette, I know how important sibling strength and support is.
Bless you all. There is comfort in knowing he lived such an exemplary life. Your dad was a Prince. Always a favorite.
    My Best,
    David Burton
