Fred Allen Roth of Spanish Fork, Utah, age 80, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2023.

He was born November 30, 1942, in Martins Ferry, Ohio to Fritz James and Margaret Elizabeth Gazda Roth.

He attended Saint John Central Academy in Bellaire, Ohio. Fred had a love for all sports. He played baseball early on in little league and then later, was the top pitcher in high school. After graduating, Fred joined the Marine Corps in Allegheny, Pennsylvania and served for four years. His military service was unique and included playing baseball for the Marine Corps. He held a 1.59 earned run average (ERA) fanned over one man per inning and is one of the big reasons the Marine Devil Dogs were top in their league. He was honorably discharged at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Fred worked hard to support his family and worked various jobs. He was well loved and infamous anywhere he worked. One of his favorite positions was manager of Ponderosa Steakhouse in Westerville, Ohio. Later in life, he worked in a factory setting and retired from Worthington Cylinders in Westerville.

After his retirement, he moved to Utah to be close to his family.

Fred enjoyed fishing and watching all kinds of sports. He was a huge Notre Dame and Ohio State fan. He was a supportive grandfather and liked to attend his grandkid’s sporting events and performances. A fun hobby he enjoyed was decorating for every holiday, especially Christmas. He loved to have his grandchildren over to look at all of the decorations on display with all kinds of sounds and lights. He especially loved to give gifts often and would help any neighbor in need.

Fred was a member of the Catholic Church and loved to serve others.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Natalie (Dan) Beddoes and his grandchildren; Clara (Ethan) Hancock, Preston Beddoes, Adalyn, Beddoes, Isaac Beddoes, as well as one great-grandchild, Ronan Hancock. He is also survived by his brother Melvin Roth. He will be deeply missed by those that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his brother, James Roth, and his sister, Mary Ann Kloss.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion at a graveside service starting at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023, in the Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson, Utah.

Very sorry to see the notice of your Dad’s passing, Natalie! Condolences to you and all the family as we mourn along with you. Your Dad was quite an athlete, and he was always fun to be around. He was quite the prankster. Prayers for all as another family member passes on. 🙏✝️

Fred will be greatly missed! My family would often come to the villa to visit. He was always out and about bringing a smile to those around him. I honestly don’t think I ever saw him without a smile. I will miss seeing his fun Christmas decorations every Christmas Eve. One year he made a super cute Halloween tree out of a small old Christmas tree. I told him how I thought it was so amazing. The next time I saw him he told me he had left it in the commons area for me to take home. One of the kindest, most thoughtful men!

Fred was a great friend. Usually when I went over to the Pioneer Villa, I would run into him. He was easy to talk to, happy, and had a genuine love for others. I loved his sense of humor, he always make others laugh with his bright smile and personality. He was always helping people around him and was so generous. His Christmas and Halloween decorations were so fun to look at, and he took pride in showing them to me and my children, he will be missed!

Prayers & Condolences to you Natalie and all of the family. Fred lived directly across the hall in #119 from my friend Shauna who had been in Pioneer Villa these last 2-1/2 months. I would see Fred once or twice a week in the hallway in passing and had a couple brief conversations with him. I wish that I had gotten to know him better because I found out from the obituary that he went to the same high school that my sister, two brothers and I went to went to back in Ohio – .St John’s Central, Bellaire, Ohio. Small world isn’t it, knowing that, we could have had some great conversations about the school and area that we grew up in. My brother Ron knew his brother James and my sister Pat was a year behind him in the Class of 61. I was in the class of 69. If you care to call me I am Gary Lepic 801-830-9302.
