Fay Jennie Butterfield Wetzel August 22, 1930 - March 18, 2025

Fay Jennie Butterfield Wetzel passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, in Payson, Utah.

She was born on Aug 22, 1930, to Lucy and Franklin Butterfield in Murray, Utah and raised in Taylorsville on an 80-acre farm. She was the fifth of six children and the first to be born in a hospital. Fay was baptized in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on temple square. How amazing! She played cello in high school and graduated from Granite High School. Fay married Earnest Wetzel on December 14, 1949.

They moved to Los Angeles, California in 1951. In 1960, they were sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple along with their five children. Fay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated homemaker.  She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her children, sewing curtains, and quilts.  Fay had a great sense of humor which everyone enjoyed!  They lived in LA for 17 years until they moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1968. Here they would reside for the next 50 years in a house Earnie built himself.

Fay worked at a nursing home then worked at Oregon Institute of Technology for 17 years as a cook and front server. Fay was active all her life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She willingly served in many positions in the church in service to others. In 2001-02 she served an LDS mission with her husband to Nauvoo, Illinois. This was the highlight of their life! They also worked as temple ordinance workers at the Portland Oregon and Medford Oregon temples.

While serving as Relief Society President at age 83, she suffered a stroke and was blessed to regain her physical abilities. After Earnie passed, she lived in Utah with Ray (son) and Vicky. We are grateful for the loving way they took care of her! Then she went to live at Orchard View Care Facility. She was so pleasant and everyone at her care facility LOVED her.

Fay enjoyed music and sang alto in church choirs. She was very patriotic and always enjoyed the outdoors, camping, people, puzzles and playing games, even in her final days.

Fay is survived by her five children Ray (Vicky) Wetzel of Payson, Utah; Janet Fee of Chehalis, Washington; Peggy (Dan) Heap of Loveland, Colorado; Teresa (Robert) Lake of Parker, Colorado; Dale (Carolynn) Wetzel of Klamath Falls, Oregon; 20 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Alfred, Dean and Stephen Butterfield, Pearl Levie and Lucy Medek; son-in-law, Michael Fee and great-grandsons Jacob Wetzel and Rufus Loucks.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Orchard View Care Facility. They worked tirelessly on Fay’s behalf for the last four years of her life. You have our deepest appreciation!

Janet, this is Pat Stickney, former roommate, sorry to read about your mom’s passing. My mom passed almost 3 years ago…still miss her a lot. Didn’t know your mom was in Payson. Hopefully, now we can touch base and keep in touch.

I’m so sad to hear of Fay passing. She was one of my favorite people when we lived in Klamath Falls. I am so sorry that I didn’t know that she has been living just 5 miles from me in Utah. I’m sending my condolences!

    Dear Wetzel Family

With loving fond memories of mealtimes and game nights of spoons and Sir Finkle Funny Featherduster! Happy times making chewing gum wrapper chains that we ran back and forth in the hallway. I spent lots of time in the car making those chains. Haha
Thank you Aunt Fay for always making me welcome in your home. Your loving kindness was appreciated
    Love

    To all the Wetzel Family…
In the late 60’s we lived next door to you. We were a young couple with 2 babies & rented the house your parents owned next door. We LOVED them. Janet babysat for us. We have kept track of them ever since. We visited in 2016 and it was so wonderful to see them one more time. The world will miss them 💕 Faye was the best at throwing parties and threw us a farewell party just before we left Klamath Falls. She & Burley colluded on a prank as “payback” for Dick, John & Lyle and they got them GOOD. I will miss your mother but I’m glad she’s back with her sweetheart. Much love FOR them and much love to you all. ♥️ Mary (&Burley)
