Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Elaine Joellen Weidemeier Hurst, passed away suddenly on October 19th, 2022, due to natural causes.
She was born on August 16th, 1949 in Glendale, California, the long-awaited first child of Joseph B. Weidemeier and Elenora L. Schoenherr. Elaine was schooled in both of her parents’ religions, Lutheran and Catholic, and attended both churches every Sunday. She attended Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Elementary School and the all girls’ Providence High School in Burbank, California. Elaine graduated from Valley College in North Hollywood, CA, and worked as a medical assistant for 15 years. She met her husband, Bruce Parley Hurst, in Glendale, CA. They were married in Solvang, CA on April 15, 1978 and Elaine instantly became a stepmother and grandmother to six kids and many grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
On March 17th, 1979, she became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Arcadia Stake.
Elaine’s choicest blessings were the births of her children, Laura Joellen Hurst in 1983 and Jason Joseph Hurst in 1987. The family moved from Yorba Linda, CA to Salem, UT in 1994 to be closer to the Hurst family. Elaine enjoyed serving in many callings in the church, especially in the Relief Society for over 25 years. She and Bruce have served several part- time Church Service missions. Her last calling with Bruce as Family History Consultants was her favorite.
Elaine’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She dedicated tens of thousands of hours to her award-winning yard, made the best flakey pie crusts and cinnamon rolls, was constantly on the lookout for the perfect gift for all her loved ones, and made everything she touched more beautiful. Her love and compassion for animals was unmatched.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Larry Greenwood, grandsons Trent Hurst and Josef Greenwood, and cousin Don Koch. She is survived by her husband Bruce, daughter Laura Caler (Ben), son Jason Hurst (Paige), sister Tish Carlson, and her grandchildren, Mason, Lily, Wyatt, and Ivy Caler, and Maddox, Emmalin, Bennett, and Oliver Hurst, as well as her six bonus children: Melinda Greenwood, Jim Hurst (Debbie), Cathy Cosby (Dennis), Kent Hurst (Elaine), Todd Hurst (Toni), and JoAnna Hall (Randy), as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great- grandchildren, beloved friends and neighbors, all of whom she cherished.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Heights Ward LDS Church, 160 South 460 West, Salem, Utah 84653. Family and friends may gather at a visitation Tuesday morning, October 25, 2022, at the church from 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m., prior to the funeral. Interment will be at Salem City Cemetery 979 South 130 East, Salem, Utah 84653.
We love you forever, Mom! We will miss you every day, until we meet again.

November 1, 2022 at 3:00 amElaine was an amazing lady! The words to me that seem to describe her best are spiritual, loving, and class. She and my mom were great friends. I remember even when I was younger visiting her how these attributes came through in the things she did. And these attributes were continually reaffirmed the older I got. She had such a big heart. It seemed like everything she did had an extra flair to it that made it special and nice. I am so sorry for your loss! I was able to watch the services online. They were very nice. I am sure she and my mom are running around somewhere in heaven. Heather
