Earl Fred Wilde, 94, of Payson, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28, 2025. Born November 16, 1930, in Provo, Utah, to Henley Oscar Wilde and Mabel Skinner, Earl lived a life full of athletic prowess, unwavering love for his family, and a zest for life that touched all who knew him.
Earl’s competitive spirit was evident from a young age. A standout basketball player at Provo High School, where he earned the nickname “Machine Gun” Wilde, his athletic talents extended far beyond the court. His passion for golf began as a caddy at Timpanogos Golf Course, culminating in his first tournament win at just 17. This passion led him to a successful career as a teaching professional, taking him from Timpanogos to prestigious golf courses in Las Vegas, including the Desert Inn, Stardust, and finally, the Dunes Hotel and Country Club, where he managed the driving range and pro shop. His athletic achievements also included numerous awards and trophies in softball (both fast-pitch and slow-pitch), bowling, and shuffleboard.
Before embarking on his professional career, Earl served his country with distinction in the Korean War as a military police officer. Upon returning home, he found love with Joan Shirlene Brimhall, marrying her on March 21, 1958, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, raising three children: Michael, and twins Sheri and Teri.
Earl’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherished for his kindness, unwavering support, and infectious enthusiasm. His warm personality and genuine care created lasting bonds with friends and family alike.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, half-sister Elaine, and brothers LaMar and Wayne. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirlene; his children, Michael (Claudia) Wilde, Sheri (Tony) Burnett, and Teri (Jeff) Hunt; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be held on March 7, 2025, at Walker Funeral Home located at 587 South 100 West in Payson, Utah. A viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service and interment with military honors at 12:00 p.m. at Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson, Utah.
