Dorcas Ann Green Hawkes June 1, 1934 - February 3, 2020

Dorcas Ann (Green) Hawkes, 85, peacefully passed away on February 3, 2020, at her home in Spanish Fork, Utah. Dorcas was born on June 1, 1934 in McCammon, Idaho to loving parents, Daniel Grant and Velma Sperry Green.

Dorcas had a thirst for knowledge. She was schooled at the feet of her mother Velma, who taught school at the Clifton, Idaho Academy where Harold B. Lee was the principal. She also learned meticulous homemaking skills from her mother’s example: washing and ironing sheets, canning, and killing a chicken to cook for Sunday dinner. She loved reading and writing. As an avid journal keeper she recorded simple daily events, showing her appreciation for the blessing of such a wonderful world.

She loved her father and went to see him often at the McCammon Big Store where he worked hard as a meat cutter. She also enjoyed fishing with him on the Portneuf River. When she was only 12 years old, during the mid-war years, her mother was left a widow with the passing of her father Daniel, on April 14, 1946. Less than four months later her little brother, Barry, died suddenly. This was a difficult time for her with so much loss.

Her years at Pocatello High School brought much joy. She was involved in leadership, pep club, and loved her algebra and biology classes. She was adored by her classmates and voted the Junior Homecoming Princess. Although pursued by many beaus, Dorcas fell in love with the high school pep band leader Gerald Ezra (Jerry) Hawkes. She was the apple of his eye. Shortly after she graduated, they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on December 30, 1952. Their love notes sustained them as Jerry traveled frequently. Between the years of 1953-1968 seven children filled their nest. Their 67 years together is a testament of their love.

Dorcas managed the family activities, shuttling the family to and from their many activities. Her love of good music and literature were instilled in the lives of her children. She loved her book club, attending education week and seminars to continue her learning.

After raising their family in Pocatello, Idaho, Dorcas and Jerry moved to Lakewood, Colorado where they resided for the next 13 years. She loved serving in the Denver Temple and enjoyed her cherished friends. After Jerry’s retirement, they settled in Spanish Fork, Utah, her home for the past 29 years. Her good works were shared as a Pink Lady at Mountain View Hospital and in her devotion to the daily feeding and caring of her grandchildren suffering from a genetic disease. With her husband, she served a full-time CES mission in Spokane, Washington for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They rode their tandem bicycle to minister to young adults; winning swing dance contests and the hearts of all they served. Our mother enjoyed her travels around Utah County on the tandem bicycle. Eventually they traveled to many countries and left with beautiful memories and life-long friendships.

With undaunting faith, she fulfilled many callings in her church while enjoying the companionship of dear friends and those she served with. Many were blessed by her exceptional sewing skills and talented hands. She donated beautiful quilts, and enjoyed making her children ski suits, coats, prom and wedding dresses, hand-knit sweaters, and afghans. Like the Dorcas of old (Tabitha), she lived a simple, pure life as a follower of Christ, fulfilling the meaning of her name as a woman “full of good works and almsdeeds” (Acts 9:36).

Even when health challenges limited her ability to serve, she continued to inspire and uplift others. Her posterity gravitated to her as she communicated with her eyes and her sweet smile. Her angelic presence was contagious to all. Her strong heart and spirit sustained her as an endeared companion to her husband who lovingly cared for her.

Dorcas is survived by her husband Jerry and her six daughters and one son: Julienne Dance (Richard), Barbie Harris (Scott), Jeanette Taylor (Ellis), Jeff Hawkes (Shelley), Gail Browning (Bart), Karen Tree (Evan), Dorcas Janell Murri (Blake). She and her husband have 32 grandchildren and 80 great-grandchildren. Her loving parents and siblings preceded her in death.

The family is grateful to all the caregivers and friends who have shown love and support.
