Dick Bingham Cahoon was born to Theron Leo and Cecil Bingham Cahoon in Payson Utah on October 27, 1933. He died peacefully in his home in Cedar Hills Utah on May 1, 2025, achieving his goal of outliving his mother’s 91 years and 6 months by just a matter of days.
Dick was raised in Payson where he played basketball and football at Payson High School. After graduation, he joined the US Air Force serving from 1951-1955. Upon his return to Utah, he headed north to Utah State University (USU) where he met his future lifelong companion, Pauline Tate, when she knocked on the wrong door in search of a textbook. They were married in June 1956 in Logan.
Dick completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering at USU while Pauline completed her studies and then supported his educational pursuits. Their first son, Brent, was born in Logan during their tenure there. After graduation, Dick began his professional career at Rockwell International in southern California where they lived for 10 years, during which time, Dick earned his MBA from USC and they welcomed five more children: sons Bruce, Mark, Matthew, and Calvin, and daughter, Sharon. Transfers, promotions, and company moves would take the family to many locations throughout the United States; Denver PA, Butler PA, Bellefontaine OH, Tucson AZ, Sahuarita AZ, Flanders NJ, Naperville IL and Flemington NJ before Dick and Pauline eventually retired in Cedar Hills UT.
With a dry wit, Dick was an engineer through-and-through continuing to recall equations learned in undergrad studies until his last days and holding didactic sessions with whomever would engage, particularly enjoying teaching a granddaughter the mechanism behind a quartz watch. The highlights of his retirement were being near many of his grandchildren, serving on the temple facilities crew, and going fishing (in no particular order). While not warm and fuzzy, he had a sincere empathy for the under trodden mentioning vulnerable adults and children in literally every prayer he offered and felt a calling to preserve his fishing haul and distribute it among his neighbors with his homemade bread becoming known as the ‘fish and bread man’ of Temple Shadows.
Dick is survived by his wife of 68 ½ years, Pauline, and five of his six children: Bruce (Joni) of Asbury NJ, Mark (Diane) of Oak Island NC, Matthew of Elk Ridge UT, Sharon Cahoon-Metzger (Ryan) of Sandy UT and Calvin (Kari) of Payson UT. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Laurie (Brent) of Westmont IL and 14 grandchildren (Kyren Adkins of Austin TX, Kainen Trowery [Taylor] of Heber UT, Tyler Cahoon of Windham ME, Paige Cahoon of Tucson AZ, Casie Cahoon of Westmont IL, Sierra Metzger of Sugarhouse UT, Jackson Metzger of London UK, Haley Cahoon of Westmont IL, Ashley Cahoon of Elk Ridge UT, Kylee Cahoon of Elk Ridge UT, Luke Cahoon of Elk Ridge UT, Makell Cahoon of Elk Ridge UT, Kali Cahoon of Payson UT, and Kaysley Cahoon of Payson UT) and one great-grandchild Elliott Trowery of Heber UT. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Lynn and Jacqueline Ann Cahoon, son Brent Paul Cahoon, and grandson Austin Cahoon.
A reception to celebrate Dick’s life will be held on Sunday, May 11, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Hills 10th Ward Chapel located at 9737 Chesterfield Dr, Cedar Hills UT followed by a graveside service with military honors on Monday, May 12, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Payson Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson UT.
