On November 24th, 2020, Della May passed away peacefully and was reunited with her sweetheart, Kenneth. Her final days were spent exactly how she wished to live everyday, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Della was born to Bert and Nina Johnson on May 27, 1933, in Sutherland, Utah. She was the eldest of six children and learned responsibility and hard work from a young age. She attended high school in Delta, Utah, and married Kenneth May on August 6th, 1953. Her first years of marriage were spent in Augusta, Georgia, where Kenneth served in the military during the Korean War. Kenneth and Della eventually settled in Spanish Fork, Utah, where she raised her nine children and supported Kenneth in his masonry business. She resided in Spanish Fork until her death, leaving a legacy of love and compassion that has touched many in that community.
Della is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith and family were the center of her life. Della taught by example to love your family fiercely, to be a friend to the friendless, and that having a tender heart is not weakness but strength. Other great lessons from Della included the healing power of hugs, caramel popcorn always tastes better when made into a popcorn witch, and gossip is best swapped while quilting.
Della is survived by eight of her children: Susan (Steve) Ewing, Mona, UT; Colleen (Ray) Lyman, Sutherland, UT; James (Charleen), Spanish Fork, UT; Douglas (Lori), Payson, UT;
Duane (Trish), Logandale, NV; Scott (Jewel), Brigham City, UT; Gary (Kathy), Ames, IA; Julie (Phil) Wright, South Jordan, UT; 45 grandchildren, and 93 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by by her husband, Kenneth May; her son and daughter-in-law, Kendall and Becci May; son-in-law, William Bryan; three granddaughters, a grandson-in-law, and a great-grandson.
A special thanks to the caring staff at Legacy House of Spanish Fork. We are so grateful for your support and care for Della during this difficult time.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 3rd, 2020, at 11 a.m. (MST) at the 19th Ward LDS Church, 585 North Main Street, Spanish Fork. Due to COVID risks, attendance will be limited to Kenneth and Della’s children and their families. Services will be broadcast and we would love others to celebrate Della’s life and legacy by watching the broadcast via YouTube at this link:

November 28, 2020 at 4:48 pmDella is one of the most Christ-like people I’ve ever known. Add her funny sense of humor to all of those attributes and she had to be the most lovable person in earth. We will forever cherish her friendship. From Sunday hugs, to homemade birthday bread and “Della jam,” her famous molasses cookies, Halloween witches, watching her walk (and drive) up and down the street serving everyone around her—she was truly one of a kind. We will miss her and try to live up to her example.
We love the May family and pray for you during this difficult time.

November 28, 2020 at 5:55 pmI was saddened to hear of the loss of your sweet Mother and Grandmother. Your Mom had a profound affect on me– she was my Laurel teacher. When my own Mother passed, she was at the funeral and gave me a message that I needed to hear. She is one of the kindest, most Christlike women I know. I was blessed to have her in my life. She will always be in your hearts. May you find peace and comfort at this time.

November 30, 2020 at 2:31 amDella or grandma May as we know her. We were so excited to know we were closely related thru her grandma and my great grandmother.
I loved visiting teaching with her she is the essence of Christ like love and gave service to all.
We had a pack the two of us I smile knowing she delivered a big hug to Glen when she got there.
I love and will miss her forever.

December 1, 2020 at 12:22 amDella is one of the most Christ-like people that I have ever met. All my memories of her are ones of love, service, happiness and more love. The first time we met was the day we moved into the neighborhood and she and Ken dropped by with a plate of yummy chocolate chip cookies to welcome us and visit. Her sincere love and friendship was an extraordinary blessing to me over the next nearly 45 years up to our last visit to the temple (where whoever she sat by soon became a dear friend) and visits at Legacy House. She ALWAYS had a smile and never let you go without saying “I love you” a few times – and of course a hug. She was the loving grandma of our ward and neighborhood. Though her love and example will be sorely missed, I do smile when I imagine her great joy at being with her sweetheart again and other family waiting for her. How extraordinarily blessed we were and how profoundly our lives were touched by her sweet spirit. Thank you Della. I love you too.

December 1, 2020 at 6:23 pmAs a member of Della’s family yet for years living so far away, we have heard so many accounts of her kindness to so many. Having said that, we really do not have to rely on others as our family upon visits or our sons working with Kenneth and family in masonry work during college were direct beneficiaries of their goodness. What a wonderful legacy they have left for their posterity and a tremendous example to all. Marlene and I send our love and sympathy to each of you but can only imagine the joy, tears and hugs that must have taken place beyond the veil when so many were reunited there. Della will be sorely missed by so many.
