David James Sorensen, 82, of Spanish Fork, Utah, passed away on December 25, 2023. He was born on May 2, 1941, in Grand Junction, Colorado, to William Howard Sorensen and Lenora Simmons Sorensen. David was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
David’s passion for education and sports began early in life. He grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah, where he graduated from Spanish Fork High School. During his time in high school, David excelled in tennis, basketball, and swimming. He even coached the swimming team for eight years, leading them to numerous victories and medals in Utah County. Academically, David was a top student and maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA as a chemistry major at Brigham Young University.
After completing his education, David served a mission for the Mormon Church in the West German Dusseldorf Mission. He later graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School with a DMD Degree in 1970. David was a member of the Fraternity of International Dentists and held prestigious memberships in the ADA and the Provo District Dental Society. He practiced dentistry alongside his father, Dr. William Howard Sorensen, and his brother, Dr. Thomas William Sorensen, in Spanish Fork, Utah, until his retirement in 2020.
David was deeply committed to his community and church. He served as the second counselor in his Provo, Utah LDS ward and dedicated many years as a Scoutmaster. His dedication to scouting was recognized with the Baden Powell Award on multiple occasions. David was also a member of Woodbadge and actively participated in its training courses.
Nature was David’s sanctuary, and he cherished every moment spent outdoors. He enjoyed swimming, camping, fishing, and hiking, with Arches National Park holding a special place in his heart. David had a profound love for music, particularly classical compositions and the music of Dave Brubeck. He was an avid fan of the movie “Lawrence Of Arabia” and could recite its lines verbatim. David’s enthusiasm extended to fast, exotic cars, especially Ferraris, and he was a proud member of The Ferrari Club.
Despite facing health challenges in his later years, David remained positive, spiritual, and intellectually engaged until the end of his life. His unwavering strength and resilience inspired all who knew him.
