David Forward Biggs, age 78, passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure, Sunday, October 24, 2021. He was surrounded by his family at his home in Spanish Fork, Utah. He was born August 25, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Thomas and Mable Forward Biggs, of Scofield, Utah. He was their ninth child.
David attended elementary school in Scofield and graduated from Orem High School. He attended BYU majoring in zoology and minoring in botany, with an emphasis in education. While at BYU, he met his sweetheart, Virginia Boren. Her roommate and his roommate were brother and sister. After David graduated from BYU, he and Virginia were married March 31, 1967, in the Salt Lake Utah Temple.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in April of that same year. David completed basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas; then was assigned to the Preventive Medicine Unit, and stationed at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington. One year later, in July 1968, David’s unit

was sent to Vietnam. He was stationed on the Bien Hoa Airbase, where he collected flea samples from the rats that were prolific in the area and removed the spleens for testing. Each week, he drove to the Pasteur Laboratory in Saigon, where the samples were tested for Bubonic Plague, to help pinpoint area of infection. When the Tet Offensive ended in early 1969f, the Vietnamese Government asked for volunteers from the U.S. Army to help preserve both human and animal remains until they could be buried. He volunteered to help and received an Army Medal of Commendation when he was honorable released from the U.S. Army. He was also awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Vietnamese Government.
Upon returning home from military service, David worked for the U.S. Forest Service and then taught school in Tooele, Utah, for one year. He next worked for the State of Utah, first in their water laboratories, and later in the metabolic screening lab, where the blood of newborn babies was tested for metabolic diseases. He worked in that lab, until he retired.
After retiring, he served as First Counselor in a bishopric. He also held various other callings in the church, including Sunday School President, Cub Master, and Ward Clerk.

David is survived by his wife, Virginia; and seven children: Heidi Pounds of Spanish Fork, Utah; Elizabeth Lowder (Matt) of Payson, Utah; Mark (Shalon) Biggs of Payson, Utah; Melanie (Auri) Burnham of Lehi, Utah; Ann (Ricky) Garcia of Springville, Utah; Steven (Tina) Biggs of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Sterling Biggs of Spanish Fork, Utah. He is also survived by two sisters of Spanish Fork, Utah: Joan Eichler and Ruby Hansen; 22
grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He had a love for Volkswagens. He owned two VW “bugs”, and a VW van, which the kids “affectionately” nicknamed the “Twinkie Mobile.” He liked and collected Marx toys – playsets and lots of extra horses and animals. He also loved HO trains. He had a passion to take broken railroad cars and engines and repair them. David loved BYU sports and didn’t miss a game. We believe he held on long enough to this life, to watch the BYU vs Washington State football game. He was so happy when BYU won!
Each summer, David worked hard to help his mom and dad take care of the family home in Scofield. He took the kids along and they learned to mow and water the grass, and to go fishing in their spare time. A few years ago, David was able to purchase his family home in Scofield, where he had grown up, and was excited to have it as a family retreat for his children and grandchildren.
David’s family would like to thank everyone who cared for David, while in the hospital and while he was on hospice, along with all those who sent their condolences.
