Darwin Edward Barnes, affectionately known as Dub, passed away surrounded by loved ones on March 18, 2024, in Payson, Utah. He was born to Cecil Edward and Ila Mae Mangum Barnes on February 6, 1942, in Miami, Arizona. He lived in El moro, New Mexico until he was 14 years old and then his family moved to Salem, Utah. He attended Spanish Fork High School and went on to learn welding and diesel mechanics at Utah Technical Institute in Provo, Utah.
Darwin married Judy Elmer on September 2, 1961, in Payson, Utah. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Provo, Utah LDS Temple and were blessed with three children. Darwin supported his family working as a welder and was known for his exceptional skill. Over the years, he was employed by Powder River, McNally’s, Geneva Steel, Mountain States Bridge and Steel, and Action Target. He welded bridges throughout the United States.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved camping, fishing, hunting, and riding his side by side. His passion for motorcycle racing led him to the pit crew, where he warmly embraced the title of “pit grandpa.” The moments that meant the most to Darwin were those spent at Widtsoe, Utah, with his family.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Darwin’s faith was a significant part of his life. He completed a service mission at the church farm in Elberta, Utah, and was a great example of home teaching and ministering.
Darwin is survived by his loving wife, Judy Barnes, his devoted children, Tracie (Allen) York of Santaquin, Utah, Jeff (Vicki) Barnes of Elk Ridge, Utah, and Vince (Amy) Barnes of Payson, Utah, ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, his brother, Dennis Barnes, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Ila Barnes, granddaughter, Brooke Adair Barnes, great-grandson, Brenton Jade Andrade and his siblings, Cecilia and Doug Barnes.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah, and on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 75 South 600 East, Payson, Utah. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson, Utah.
