Dale Lee Muhlestein, age 82, our Grandpa, Dad, Husband, Brother, Uncle, and Best Friend, passed away at his home in Payson, Utah on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Dale was born in Provo, Utah, July 17, 1941, and reared by his parents, Sterling Reed and Melva Emily (Joyce) Woods Muhlestein, straight down the mountain under the “Y” on Briar Avenue where he spent his youth exploring the foothills with his three brothers. He loved the annual backpacking trips into the Grandaddies with his Dad, fishing at Strawberry, and the hunting trips (not so much) with his father and his brothers although he enjoyed being outdoors with them; those were great times.
He attended elementary school in Provo, Lincoln Jr. High in Orem, and graduated from Orem High School in 1959. It was there, and at the ward MIA activities that he met, then married Linda Jean Patten, December 18, 1959. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on September 24, 1964.
Dale loved spending time with his children and grandchildren building huge speaker systems for youth dances, model rocketry, HAM radio, rockhounding, astronomy, photography including processing photos in a makeshift darkroom, birding, water skiing, camping, fishing, building drones and all sorts of electronic devices. He always had two mitts and a softball nearby hoping to get someone to play catch with him.
Dale graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from BYU in 1967. His entire career was working in the field of Electronics Technology beginning at Honeywell in Phoenix and ending at Micron in Boise, with eight stops along the way. He loved going to work each day helping the world evolve from large rooms of huge computer main frames to the tiniest of micro-chips.
Dale was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and devoted to missionary work. When he was ordained to the office of a Seventy, his dream of serving a mission came to fruition as he served the people in the Phoenix West Stake. Dale was called on many service missions for the church including traveling all over Southwestern Idaho to train stake emergency radio communications specialists, serving as a Family History Support Missionary, and as a temple ordinance worker in the Boise Idaho Temple. In 2014, Dale and his wife Linda were called to serve as missionaries in the Utah Provo Mission in the Payson Utah South Stake.
In 1974, Dale was set apart by Elder Howard W. Hunter as bishop of the Phoenix 38th Ward. In his lifetime, Dale served in over 40 church callings and dearly loved all those whom he served.
Dale is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda; five children: Gary (Linnea) Muhlestein of West Valley City, Utah; Douglas Muhlestein of Orem, Utah; Karen R. (Tracey) Call of Salem, Utah; Kent (Dawn) Muhlestein of Layton, Utah; and Kevin Muhlestein of Payson, Utah; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers: John (Patricia) of El Sobrante, California and Michael (JoAnn) of West Valley City, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother Verl R. Muhlestein (Myrna).
For those who would like to offer 73’s, a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Springlake 5th Ward LDS Chapel, 482 West 1400 South, Payson, Utah. Visitation will be prior from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. The family will also receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on October 8, 2023, at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah. Interment will be in Salem City Cemetery, 965 South 140 East, Salem, Utah.

October 8, 2023 at 1:39 amI never had the honor of meeting Dale. But I have had the privilege of working with his son Kent in a couple different capacities for the last several years. I know that Dale had a very strong work ethic and I can now see where Kent was blessed w that same gift of hard work. God bless the Muhlestein family. Sending all our prayers to the entire Muhlestein clan.
