Cleve Mann Waite passed away at his home, August 24, 2021, at the age of 81. He was born October 22, 1939, to Mary Priscilla Mann and Ira Levi Waite, in Clearfield, Utah. Cleve was their seventh child. He grew up in Star, Idaho, and helped run the family farm. He had four sisters: Vaunda, Naola, Lawana, and Thelda; and two brothers, Lynn and John. He attended high school in Meridian, Idaho, graduating in 1958 from Meridian High School. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes Mission, Fort Wayne, Indiana, spending much time in Michigan and Indiana.
Cleve met his future wife, Evelyn Daylene Raff, at a church social, before he left on his church mission. After returning home from his mission, they married on January 5, 1962. They were together 23 years and had 11 children, but later divorced.
He attended Rick’s College in Rexburg, Idaho, after his church mission. He then worked hard learning the trade of welding and was employed for many years at Mountain States Steel, helping construct the beams for the 800 North fly-over bridge into Provo Canyon. He doubly ran his own pumping service, with a contract for the National Forest’s campgrounds in Utah. He would suffer great loss to divorce, and moved many times, leaving his hard work and efforts behind.
Cleve returned to school to learn the trade of forced air heating and cooling systems. He worked for Professional Heating in Pleasant Grove, and saved all he could for the future.
He met Joyce Taylor Stevens after being introduced by a mutual friend. They married July 3, 1996, and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Utah Temple. Joyce had two daughters, Rachel and Juliann, who joined the family, making 13 children. The family made their home in Payson, Utah. He again built a business in HVAC design and installation, at which he was successful and retired doing. His last days were spent as an aide on a school bus for Nebo School District.
Cleve had a beautiful baritone voice and loved signing in the Payson Chorale and Skyline Barbershop choirs. In addition to the enjoyment of singing, whenever he could get a free moment, Cleve could be found fishing at Deer Creek, Strawberry, or Current Creek. He could grill a trout to remember eating! If he wasn’t fishing, he was in the garden, or building in the garage, or serving his family and neighbors. His hobbies included restoring old Farmall tractors (which he drove in many city parades), building an electric car, camp trailer, doing leatherwork, and coin collecting.
Cleve was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. He loved those he served with, and he was called to serve throughout this life. He served as a temple worker in the Provo, Utah and Payson, Utah Temples. This was the highlight of his weeks. He loved the Lord and serving in His house brought him joy.
Cleve is preceded in death by his parents; siblings and their spouses; his beloved wife and eternal companion, Joyce; his youngest daughter, Evelyn Morris; a step- daughter, Juliann Sharp; and a step-grandson, Scott Mower.
He is survived by 11 children: Seth (Shelly) Waite, Kerri (Douglas) Hamrick, Lyle (Jenene) Waite, Tamra (Randal) Thorup, Chrystal (Peter) Kwiatkowski, Amber (Trenton) Anderson, Ira (Kerri) Waite, Dayton (Jeneane) Waite, C.J. (Kari) Waite, Rachel Mower, Xandr J. Waite, 42 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Nola Waite.
