Cathie Anne Carter Bastian, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 3rd at 5:15 p.m. at the age of 83.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 18, 1942, Cathie was the eldest of four daughters born to loving parents, Wesley Ray Carter and Ina Claire Carter (Hayes). The family lived briefly in Salt Lake City before moving to Ogden, where Cathie grew up. She was close to her sisters Sheila, Ina Claire, and Denice, and shared many childhood adventures, including hiking in the foothills and dancing in ballet recitals.
Cathie attended Ogden schools, where she excelled in business courses and was involved in the yearbook staff. Though shy, she worked hard to maintain high academic standards. She later attended Brigham Young University (BYU), where she studied Human Development and Family Relations and Elementary Education. It was there that she met the love of her life, Reese Bastian. Their love blossomed quickly, and they became engaged in June 1963, with a wedding held at the Salt Lake Temple on September 6, 1963.
After their marriage, the couple lived in various places, including Salt Lake City, Idaho, and California, as Reese pursued his career. Cathie worked in various roles, including teaching first grade, working at Hill Air Force Base, and later serving as the registrar at a junior college. She also pursued her love of oil painting and sewing.
Throughout her life, Cathie was a devoted mother to five children. She poured love and energy into her family, fostering close bonds and creating countless memories. In addition to raising her children, Cathie worked in various church callings, including teaching sewing classes and participating in the Cub Scout program.
In 1982, Cathie and Reese made the decision to move to Orem, Utah, where they would raise their children near extended family. Later, they moved to Mapleton, Utah, in 1994, where they enjoyed their years together in retirement. They were blessed with 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in Cathie’s heart. Her love for her family was unwavering, and she was known for her gentle kindness and unwavering support.
Cathie will be remembered for her nurturing spirit, her resilience, and her unwavering devotion to her family. She found joy in the small moments and always put the needs of others before her own. Though she has passed, her legacy of love, kindness, and service to others will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Cathie is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ina Claire, and her loving husband Reese John Bastian. She is survived by their five children: Maren (Brett), Michael (Korrie), Melinda, Christine (John), and Brandon (Emily), 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, and many extended family members who will forever cherish her memory.
A funeral service celebrating Cathie’s life will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 1316 South Main Street, Mapleton, UT 84664. The public viewing will be held 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery.
