Catherine Jean Wiedmann Dutson (Cathy), of Spanish Fork, Utah passed away unexpectedly at the age of 73 on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at Utah Valley Hospital. Cathy was born March 5, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri to Lawrence Lloyd Wiedmann and Anna Emma Ayres Wiedmann. Cathy was the oldest child and had two younger brothers (Lawrence and William). Cathy spent her childhood and adolescent years discovering the many unique features of the “Show Me State.”
Cathy attended elementary, junior high, and high school in St. Louis County where she kept her teachers on their toes with her “spunky attitude.” Cathy’s candid and sassy demeanor appeared when she was three years old and became her signature throughout her life. She excelled as a student and participated in many activities that developed her love of art and music. In her Junior year of high school, she played the guitar in a folk band called the “Four Sinners.” The band was later renamed the “Villagers.”
After Cathy graduated from Ritenour high school, she hopped on a Greyhound bus and made the long journey across the Midwest to Rexburg, Idaho to attend Ricks College. After she received her Associate degree at Ricks, she transferred to Brigham Young University (BYU), in Provo, Utah majoring in Elementary Education where she completed her Bachelor’s degree.
During her education at BYU, she met the love of her life, Randall K. Dutson, in the BYU library. Randy and Cathy were married on June 4, 1971, in the Salt Lake City Temple. The newlyweds made their first home in Provo living in Randy’s grandfather’s apartments and started their family with the birth of their daughter in April of 1973. Cathy was hired as a 7th grade teacher at Goshen Elementary school. Randy and Cathy purchased their first home in Payson, UT.
Cathy and few of her colleagues carpooled back-and-forth to Goshen, until new teaching opportunities opened up at Larsen Elementary near her current home in Spanish Fork, UT where she taught fifth grade and expanded her family. She also made lifelong friendships as she continued to teach.
Cathy’s professional development extended throughout her career in Nebo School District as a Facilitator over BYU student teachers. Teaching these bright young students brought her great pleasure. She loved watching her students succeed. Cathy was easily recognized by former students she taught over the years. Cathy received many awards and recognition throughout her 44 years of teaching in Nebo School District.
Upon retirement, she dedicated her life to her family and grandchildren. Cathy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in various callings and was a temple worker in the Payson Utah temple. Cathy’s hobbies included going on spontaneous shopping trips with her daughters, traveling and going on trips to St. Louis, MO, playing softball, reading anything she could get her hands on, going drink runs, walking, attending music concerts, playing cards, and dominoes.
Cathy is survived by her children Kimberly D. Barraclough (Jonathan), Kellie D. Hancock (Michael), Kasey Alyse Dutson, and Devin K. Dutson (Candice), her grandsons Colton Barraclough, Wyatt and Rhett Hancock, and her two brothers Lawrence Wiedmann of Orem, and William and Amy Wiedmann of St. Louis, MO, She is preceded in death by Randall Kay Dutson, husband, Lawrence L. Wiedmann, father; Anna E. Ayres Wiedmann, mother; Kendall Atkin Dutson, father-in-law; Dorothy Leone Wilde Dutson, mother-in-law; and granddaughter, Annalyse Karen Barraclough.

I love you all and want to extend to you my condolences at this time. My heart was saddened as I read of your mom’s passing.
I loved Cathy. Spending 26 years teaching with her at Larsen Elementary was truly a great experience. She was so full of love for those around her. I enjoyed her spunky personality and after teaching all of you I had a special bond with her. She was always supportive of me, you, and those around her. May you always have special memories of her and may you be blessed with peace and comfort at this time,
My love and prayers are with you,

We’re sorry for the loss of your mom at this time, but we know through the atonement of Jesus Christ that even though death may separate us for a time, we will all be reunited again someday. Praying for your family at this time.
